I got about 6000+ on my original tires. Always properly inflated, I weigh 190 and ride pretty conservatively. Got a set of Zippys on there now and I'm up to 9000 miles with no appreciable wear on the new set.

Hope they're good until 12000 or more.

So is the solution to put something in that area that is mushy but firm so it can support the bouncing of the case and rack, but not fail?

Or do I budget $75 a year to keep replacing the back rack?

OR do I find a welder who could put a much thicker crossbeam there?

That wasn't the easiest install ever, but it wasn't the hardest. Not sure I'm comfy with the way it's attached to the back rack, but it's on there pretty tight. Guess I'll really crank it down after a few rides.

Got a replacement 35w halogen from Scooters Go Green in South Boston and installed that in 31 minutes.

Have also ordered the PIAA bulb ($46 shipped) from my local Honda motorcycle dealer.

Will install the PIAA in the next week or so and keep the other basic bulb as a spare.
