gas smell

Is it definitely gas, or could it be oil?
It's possible that your piston rings aren't set. Or they could be starting to fail. This would allow oil to come up the cylinder wall, into the top end where it pushes out that tube that ties into your air box.

Most likely new battery may be needed. But go have your local shop put a meter to check out the stator.

Sounds like oil is pushing up through the rings, to the cylinder head, which is fouling the plugs. Unscrew the spark plug. Plug it back into the cable. Hold it next to the frame and hit the starter.
Are you getting spark?
Could be as simple as that.

Was it having a hard time idling before this happened?
It could be the stator.

Quick question: do you find your variator/ belt slipping after polishing it up like that? Cleaning it to get all of the dust off from the belt and clutch makes sense. But using the polish on the face of the plate would make the face of the variator slicker, seems counterintuitive. I'm just curious ...
