If you don't see any smoke, especially blue smoke, then it's not likely you're burning oil. To be sure, pull the spark plug and see if there's any oil buildup on it. Also check your oil level.

I agree with the starting fluid approach. Generally speaking, if it starts, even if only for a second or two, then you have good spark and a fuel issue. If it doesn't, then you have a spark issue.
