MB member BuddyLicious sent this my way so gets full credit for finding what appears to be an announcement of the long-awaited 4T Stella:
http://www.scooterridersnow.com/PublicFiles/DepartmentViewer.asp?ArticleID=822
This isn't sourced so I don't know where they heard this. I'll try to get confirmation from Genuine ASAP.
We've heard about this for some time and even thought it might make an '09 debut. I'm just glad I'll no longer look like the the boy who cried "Stella," constantly saying that this was coming at some point. Felt slightly vindicated when LML had a 4T at EICMA. _________________ Eric // Flickr group // LA Scooter Meetup Group // twitter: @scooterism // ScooterFile

+1. I also was hoping for something more than a simply a Bajaj sold through Genuine (Yeh, I know. LML, Bajaj, whatever). The 2T Stella could use a bit more power. The 4T Bajaj Chetak needed more than a bit of a boost. Hopefully a bigger engine is out there someplace in the plan.

Here's the plan: ride it 'til the warranty's out, then drop a P200 motor in there.
You can also buy a brand new 5-port, 2 stroke LML engine for $1099.
I know a lot of work has gone into making this Stella as good as can be, which is one reason we've waited so long for it. It'll pull a lot of people into dealers, though some may ride away on Buddys. That's good, too.
Genuine does have a bigger scoot in the pipeline… maybe a couple. They'll be PGOs, though. _________________ Eric // Flickr group // LA Scooter Meetup Group // twitter: @scooterism // ScooterFile

This is bad news for me because I would like a Stella... but the environmentalist in me can't do a 2 stroke, however what I really need is a new car.

While the 4t Bajaj needed more power, it could still out accelerate the Stella when you had a stock v. stock race.
I doubt we will see a Bajaj motor. 1) Bajaj doesnt make the motor anymore.2) you cant put the Bajaj motor in an LML frame (or regular P) since the motor is wider. The Bajaj stampings for the frame are different.
I also have a hard time imagining a 200cc 4t motor coming from India. The scooters there are 150s. In their mindset, your going to buy a motorcycle if you want more than that, so they just dont make the engines bigger that 150. Fuel economy is paramount to a scooter buyer there, plus they very rarely have a need to exceed 50mph, especially when going home along a goat path. _________________ -Paul O.

So how would that work or look,I mean on the rear side's of the Stella now you have on 1 side the spare tire and on the other side you have the engine. With a 4-stroke Stella would those be replaced with the tranny cover replacing the 2-strokes spare tire and then the other side you would have the 4-strokes exhaust replacing the what now is the 2-strokes engine area. What I mean is what you would actually see.I wish I could use something like photoshop to put together what a 4-stroke Stella should look like.Or at least assume what it should look like.Happy Happy....

well, you cant easily put a modern 4t automatic (atleast the way we know it) in a P frame...takes quite a bit of modification to work since the distance from the swing arm mount to the centerline of the wheel is much shorter on a Vespa large frame style motor. I think we are more likely to see a 4t motor similar in shape to the current large frame motor so that body stampings dont have to change (which are freakishly expensive to tool up). Is it going to be auto or manual? I would guess manual, but if automatic, that can be done within the goofy confines of a vespa style motor. The PK Automatica was a smallframe with a CVT. No frame mods were required for that one. _________________ -Paul O.

Wow, when you sent me that, eric, i just saw it as a rehash of that story from a year ago that said the same thing. Cool to hear it's getting close.
Also, to whoever said "I'd never ride a 2-stroke," note that a lot of modern 2-strokes are way better for the environment than some older 4-strokes, and even a lot of modern 4-strokes may not be as eco-friendly as you'd think.
Always look for the real-world numbers and make a fair comparison based on similar current bikes, forget the generalizations. That info is not hard to find, but sadly, it's just about impossible to make sense of.
My understanding (based entirely on hearsay) is that it will be called the Stella, and that it may not look much like the Stella we know and love. But don't quote me on that, that's just rumor.
I think there are a lot of people that know a lot more about it than I do.

Oops, I quoted you on that.
I haven't heard anything about a different body style. I think the 4-stroke LML Star seen at EICMA had basically the same body from what I could tell. That doesn't mean there weren't changes made to the Stella version. This has been in the works for at least a couple of years, since LML started producing again. Maybe even before that. _________________ Eric // Flickr group // LA Scooter Meetup Group // twitter: @scooterism // ScooterFile

That was the April fool's joke last year, so if it is again, that's pretty lame. Plus April 1st is tomorrow and Eric said it was confirmed yesterday...

Uh oh, I may have an extremely difficult decision to make... I can wait for the Stella or buy a '68 Honda CD175.
Someone in my area is selling one on CL! Man I will never be able to make up my mind!

That is a tough decision. I'm going to say STELLA! At least it'll have a warranty,. be as easy to work on, but will be easier to buy parts for.
Unless the CD175 is red, in which case it's a toss up. _________________ Eric // Flickr group // LA Scooter Meetup Group // twitter: @scooterism // ScooterFile

haha, no it's black (which I actually prefer over red). and it only has 8000 miles on it, excellent condition.
Yeah, Stella would be way easier to keep up with, especially since I've gotten to know a bit about working on
modern scooter engines. Stella is more than twice as much $$$, but maybe I could get the CD175 and then
sell the buddy when the Stella comes out? Then my garage will look like this!

So what engine do you figure they will use for the 4T Stellas? Like a PGO engine or does LML make one?
Their current models are all 2-stroke except the "Trendy" which is only 60cc anyways... _________________

It's an LML engine (I'm pretty sure). There is an LML Star (aka Stella) 150cc 4-stroke version available in some Asian countries and North Africa. _________________ Eric // Flickr group // LA Scooter Meetup Group // twitter: @scooterism // ScooterFile

Here's what I could find on it:

This dealer says the Star Deluxe is available as 2-stroke and 4-stroke:

A lot of the info out there on these is inconsistent. I'll keep looking.
I can't recall where I first read about the existing 4-stroke version; it was on some UK blog or forum. I've seen it referred to in a few places but of course didn't bookmark them. _________________ Eric // Flickr group // LA Scooter Meetup Group // twitter: @scooterism // ScooterFile

is it just me, or does this seem like a bad idea? i had looked forward to upgrading to a stella, and when I blew up the LML motor, replacing it with a P200e rebuild. The biggest charm about the stella is the interchangability with P bikes. If you go 4T, you lose that.

I guess I'm out on the Stella. If it were auto I'd be in for one.Maybe just maybe there will be an auto added at some time in the future.I love the vintage look and always have but never have been interested in shifting. Also had they went auto there would have been less maintenance, like there is now.Oh well there is no way to make everyone happy. We all know that.

No it's not you,we all have are personal preferences.Whats really needed is 3 versions of the Stella, you know what we have now, then the 4-stroke shifting and then the 4-stroke auto. Then everyone is happy. If the 4-stroke manual does come out,I'd be willing to bet sales will stay about the same as they have been. You know the camps wanting a specific type of Stella is split.

Why would you lose interchangeability with the P-series if this has a 4T engine? I think you could still swap engine and carb for a P200.
Three versions of the Stella might make everyone happy, but it would make Genuine broke. Even as a 4T, the Stella fills a very specific niche—vintage style and functionality with a warranty.
That said, I do think there's room for a vintage-styled 250cc or larger scooter to compete with the Vespa GTS. This might be the Genuine touring scoot we've heard rumors of. It might be some future auto Stella with a 250cc 4T engine. It might be something totally unexpected. I'd love to see a quality, lower-priced scooter competing with the GTS/Super the way the Buddy competes with the Vespa LX/S. (Other than, of course, the Piaggio and Aprilia 200/250/300s.) _________________ Eric // Flickr group // LA Scooter Meetup Group // twitter: @scooterism // ScooterFile

I was just daydreaming about the 4T Stella summore today... It got me thinking what
the price might be. I figured it would be close to the same? Any speculation? _________________

I'm speculating that it'll be pretty darn close to the current Stella. And no, I have no inside info on this. _________________ Eric // Flickr group // LA Scooter Meetup Group // twitter: @scooterism // ScooterFile
