Darn! Just missed the cutoff.
The movie is about an older guy who joins a scooter club of mostly young guys. I guess maybe the assumption is that scootering and clubs are for the under-30 set.
I tried to pitch myself to Hanks (via Twitter) as "scooter consultant" but didn't get a reply. go figure! _________________ Eric // Flickr group // LA Scooter Meetup Group // twitter: @scooterism // Whatever it is, it's probably your rollers.
Age discrimination sucks when you are the age that is being discriminated against. The old scooter folk should show up at the casting call anyways and shake their fist impotently at the 18 - 28 year olds. _________________ Using the internet for evil since 1994.

Funny, considering most of the under 30 crowd can't afford modern Vespas. _________________
We have stats here on the scooter age group, don't we? I thought last I looked there were way more folks here over 30 then 18-20 year olds? What made them think that scooter clubs are made of young guys ? Someone needs to re-write that script
So do you think the writers are lurking in the scooter boards? And if so, where do you think they're getting more of the material, MB, MV, or the BBS? _________________ Don't beat the red horse.

LOL. That would be… bad…
Hanks and Nia Vardalos cowrote the script. I don't think they're going for verité here. _________________ Eric // Flickr group // LA Scooter Meetup Group // twitter: @scooterism // Whatever it is, it's probably your rollers.

my friends scooted up from San Diego. They said you filled out paperwork, took a few pictures and had to drive in and out of cones. Apparently it was a tryout for an extra part?

Damn, now I need to pick something else to wear. Don't want to show up in the same outfit...
What time are you going? I'm planning on going earlier rather than later as there is the WeHo ArtWalk in the afternoon. Let me know and maybe we can hook up. _________________ "It's only fun if you live to talk about it."

So I went and it went well. Hanks is looking at all the pics Wednesday and I was told I might get called back for a training and rehearsal.
Apparently, they're really looking for girls, some of which were getting callbacks for screen tests/auditions. Genuine dealer Rt. 66 Modern in Marina del Rey sent in a ringer, a tattooed young lady who was riding one of their heavily branded rental Buddys. The casting folks liked her a lot.
There was also an actress on hand who's already been cast.
There were also several actors (or wannabes) there with head shots. Some rode MCs so had to use a borrowed or rented scooter. One guy was having trouble with the Buddy and nearly pulled a stoppie at the end of his ride.
Several Buddys showed up, including our own SkootzKabootz. I've been informed the production office is decorated in Buddy and Stella posters, so I'm hopeful there will be a Buddy prominently featured in the movie. _________________ Eric // Flickr group // LA Scooter Meetup Group // twitter: @scooterism // Whatever it is, it's probably your rollers.
Well, if they pick a "Buddy" rider I might as well get a full alarm system installed in mine. They'd be he hottest item on every bike thief's list as soon as he movie comes out. Poor Dobby, a wanted scoot
Seriously, I hope one of you guys or ladies gets to be in the movie. That would be such a fantastic thing to happen to a scooter brand AND our scooter riders!!!

Maybe Tom Hanks will name his scoot "Jenny"
We just started a Facebook riding group in KC. One of my first posts was about this movie. I am wanting to do a ride and watch it at a Drive-In theater.
Things you might hear in the movie...
"ride Forrest, ride..."

It was fun to see the wide variety of scooters and scooter riders yesterday. The Ruckus crew made quite an entrance.
Get ready for a surge in new scooter riders following the release of the film. Good news for dealers... _________________ "It's only fun if you live to talk about it."

You never know. The image is probably going to be distorted somewhat and sometimes these things don't have that effect. It's not like "Whip It" led to huge surges in interest in roller derby. _________________ Eric // Flickr group // LA Scooter Meetup Group // twitter: @scooterism // Whatever it is, it's probably your rollers.

Having a cultural impact usually depends on people actually seeing the movie. _________________

Hey, that's Jessica Baur from Route 66! She sold me my Blackjack. She's such a sweetheart. Actually, she could probably sell me anything, heh. I do hope she gets the job, or part, whatever. She is smart and deserving.
As for the movie itself... oy. Hanks has played some wonderful roles over the years, I give him full credit for that. But writing a scooter movie? Oh dear. Is there an emoticon for "cringe"?
While I'm thinking about it, a question. Are there any "scooter" movies to look for? All I can think of is Quadrophenia, but I'm dumb and its early a.m.

my thought is will scooter life style (which is varied) be represented fairly in this?
It seems whenever they have a guy riding a scooter, he is:
too big for it
on a scooter that is too slow for conditions
clumsy
dorky
swerving all over
wearing a half helmet
and crashing.
I love Tom Hanks but I hope his time on a scooter is not a 5 minute scene related to a midlife crisis.

the movie is about a middle-aged man who gets fired and has to find a new career. most likely a comedy, so i think they'll play the scooter for laughs.
btw, peter scolari is in it! think there'll be any bosom buddies references?

Scolari was also in That Thing You Do!, which I actually love. I have mixed feelings about Hanks' other films—love some (Big), not so much others (Saving Private Ryan), hate some others (Forrest Gump)—but that's true for a lot of actors.
I know a lot of people who cover celebs, film and the entertainment industry and not once have I ever heard a bad thing about Hanks, which is exactly why a lot of people suspect he's evil. No one's that clean!
The movie is just that, a movie. I don't expect any group or subculture to be accurately portrayed in entertainment. Look at how diverse we are here, then look at the whole of scootering. It really can't be summed up. I'm sure some people will be disappointed, maybe a few will be irked.
On the other hand, I expect more from Hanks than "Wild Hogs" on scooters.
From how the casting was going, it didn't look like they were going for nerdy, dorky types. That lowers my chances significantly.
Unfortunately there were a handful of badass, tattooed all over types they were very interested—MC riders who had to borrow scoots to try out and some pro actors. Meh. I'd rather see nerds.

It's been commented that the only way Philadelphia got made and was so successful - in spite of the public's prevailing attitudes at the time about gay men with AIDS - was by casting the single most-liked actor in the country as the protagonist.

In other words, however they depict scooterists, it will be accurate... but probably not representative of most of us. _________________

Encouraging. Today's table read of the script. The production office has Stella, Black Jack and Rattler posters and banners!
One girl some of us know has gotten a callback. (I won't jinx her by saying who it is yet. ) From what I hear, the guys get called later this week or early next. _________________ Eric // Flickr group // LA Scooter Meetup Group // twitter: @scooterism // Whatever it is, it's probably your rollers.

No and yes.
Hanks took the pic and posted it to his Twitter feed, which is almost all about this movie. http://twitter.com/tomhanks
Here's another her posted a while ago with some scoots they've gathered. An odd array. I've actually heard Hanks' Larry Crowne is rocking the light blue Yamaha Riva. Hope having a scoot the same color won't hurt my chances, ha. _________________ Eric // Flickr group // LA Scooter Meetup Group // twitter: @scooterism // Whatever it is, it's probably your rollers.
