Question about multimeter testing

hello all,

so I need to test my running lights voltage. I have a multimeter but have not used it before. It says in the user manual the the Buddy electrical system is AC flywheel, does this mean I need to set my multimeter to AC? another question I had is would the ACV 200 setting on my meter be the correct one? also, I do not have aligator clips, should I go get some or can I just hold the probes up to the wires?
