How complicated can it be?

It is time to service the black jack.
I have an ability to over complicate the simplest task...
I decided to check the oil today but ran into some questions...
Do I check the oil while on the center stand, Side stand or flat on the ground?
Do I screw the dip stick all the way in to check? or just dip it in?
There is so little oil in these little engines, each variation gives me a different reading.

The check I've always done is:
A) On the centerstand, on the flattest surface I can find
B) Pressed in until the dipstick touches the threads, but doesn't screw in
C) 2-5 minutes after the engine has stopped, so the oil can settle down.

Screw it in and the oil should go to the top of the hashmarks on the stick, only to the threads and it should be in the middle.
I prefer to screw it in and make sure it is to the top and no further, it feels more clear to me that way, but the first time I was shown how to check oil on a scooter I was told not to screw it in.
As long as you know where it should be, whatever method you are using. You don't want to over or under -fill.

I'm with Sparky and easy on this (though Vic's guidance should work fine). I've checked the oil on every scooter and motorcycle I've ever owned by pressing the dipstick to the top of the threads without screwing it in. Seems to work out right on the Bud as well as far as recommended oil volume.

I am in agreement with sparky also.
I do the same with my KTM (push dipstick to the threads)
It seems Genuine could clear this up in their owners manual.
... Of course the KTM manual is no clearer on the subject.
