Modern Buddy

I've been searching for a decent replacement for the feeble stock horn in my Vespa GTS and have found what I think is a worthy successor to the (sadly discontinued) Stebel Nautilus air horn that us Buddy owners know and love.

Check this out.

The Screaming Banshee air horn keeps your existing stock horn in place for making friendly toots, but hold it down for more than .5 seconds and a pulsating 139db monster air-horn kicks while simultaneously flashing your high beams. Check out the video. If that doesn't get someone's attention, I don't know what will.

It appears to be small enough to fit in most scooters but just incase it's a tight fit there is also a smaller version with the same features. I'll let you know how the installation on my GTS goes.

I like the Banshee, but wasn't able to jump in on their kickstarter buy in. The concept seems pretty awesome. Let us know your impressions.

I have to say the design seems really well thought out. For the horn itself, apparently they started with the Stebel design and then improved a couple of weak spots (I never knew there were any). But I think the electronics are the real bonus. I just learned there are various options you can set for the airhorn so that, for example, you can have it sound steadily (like the Stebel) rather than pulse if you wish. Nice to have the choice.

Supposedly the install is "simple" but you'd best wish me luck none the less.

I'm not sure. They do look similar. Perhaps Wolo is doing the manufacturing for them?

I seen at Gizmag the new Banshee Plug & Play Compact Horn.It's a 120db horn(original is 139db) but supposed to be still very loud.Take a look.

I don't mean to knock it but there is a huge difference between 120 and 139 db, IIRC every 3 db you double the loudness.

Looks like they have a split system too, might be able to fit under the horncast on a Stella. They're doing a black Friday special, each full unit is an additional 10% off, so if we can pool 4 orders, they'd only be about $65 each.

Pretty neat! I might consider one of these for my Blur, as I'm constantly planning to upgrade the horn and I've always *loved* the dual-horn idea.

Maybe the LASG should do a garage night every few months, for people with like-minded upgrades to get some teamwork on and share tools (ie, horn installs). I suppose the leeches (people like me, no skills or tools) could bring drinks or food. The UCLA Motorcycle Club does something like this, but they're not scooter friendly on garage night.

I'll continue to monitor this thread and if we have 4 people who definitely want to get one of the full systems, I'm willing to make the purchase on Friday to get the discount and then, maybe using paypal I can ship them out to each person. Looks like we have two definites and one maybe so far.

any success with this? after reading the thread i really want one. has anyone succeeded with the Stella?

I haven't done it yet but absolutely still plan too. I consulted with the Robot at Motosport Vespa about it and he likes it. I am just on the fence about whether to install it myself or have him do it for me as I am a little weary of opening up my new Vespa and doing electrical things. I'm totally new to the scooter and have never done anything like this before. But one way or another it is going to get done!

I really want one for my stella and was planning to put it under the left cowl, since I had a rack with spare carrier.

That rack however started cracking and despite fixing it with a weld and a piece of steel I am nervous to use it for more than a beauty piece at rallies at this point. So I need to figure out a new mounting place that makes sense.

There are still some Nautiluses available on eBay. I got a red one for under $40! Seller has more, but has raised the price to $38.50 + $9 shipping. Still better than what they're going for some places.

Haven't had time to mount it yet. It may go in the Vespa, and I'll move my Magnum to the Stella. Just easier installs for both.

Thanks for the heads up, I ordered myself one!

My only qualms about using a Stebel now is that it is a defunct company and thus no support, warranty etc.

We have had 5 Internationals (currently 3) and all the Stebel air horns work great.

Why would a defunct company have new literature and products dated 2013 showing on their website?

Hmmm...I'm wondering about mounting a Chrome Stebel to a front rack or light bar on a Stella???

They're back in business????? That is great! They had gone belly up. Thus the reason for this whole thread. I wonder when this happened? Great news indeed.

That's good news indeed. I was looking for a horn to replace the meep-meep version on my new Honda.

I can't tell whether Stebel ever closed its doors or if they were in the Italian equivalent of a bankruptcy / reorganization and emerged, perhaps without suspending operations.
