Stripped mirror threads on my Buddy scooter

Post by UWHusky »

I tried to find a thread on this, but didn't see anything.

Is it easy to replace the throttle body housing on a (2009) Buddy? My right side mirror was stripped. The previous owner had a larger threaded mirror attached.

I want to replace the throttle body (where the threaded mirror screws into), if it isn't too difficult.

If anyone knows of a thread that explains the procedure, please let me know.

Thanks.

Not too bad.

You'll need to loosen the upper and lower handlebar cover on that side to get access to the screws holding the switch together.

Remove two screws under handlebars on side you're replacing.

There is a plastic tab holding the upper handlebar cover to the lower handlebar cover. You'll need to undo this tab with a small - screwdriver to allow the panels on that side of the handlebar to come apart. The tab is near where the brake lever enters the covers, above the DOT signal, on the front of the plastics.

Now take your long + head screwdriver and loosen the 2 long screws on the back of the switch (these will be visible as you look in through the separated plastics.

Replace the back of the switch.

Follow steps in reverse order to reassemble.

make sure you go to scoot about over on 1st and denny, they are the new genuine dealership. very nice folks and very reasonable on their service rates. ducati used to be the genuine dealer, but when the owner sold they gave up the franchise. just as well cuz their service department was terrible. go to 'scoot about', you won't be sorry. :) they have a facebook page, btw.

Thanks iamryan25 and scullyfu; will have to dig into it this week.

As far as referencing the part that I'll need--what is the proper name of the piece that I'm going to want to order? I would assume it's something like "inner throttle assembly" or something like that?

Thanks!

Buddy parts name make no sense.

# p154h02000 "case, switch under 1"

Was $15 with tax last year at my dealer. Mirrors are $54 with tax sold by the pair only. I'm forever breaking the left side off, small garage...sigh.

^ Unfortunately the mirrors shown don't have a right reverse thread.

Throw, I don't think that's true. The '09, at least _my_ '09, has one lefty and one righty thread.

UW, tell us how it works out for you, as I have to do the same thing.
Torquing the mirror too tight has pulled the threads all to crap on mine.

FYI: My 08 Buddy has reverse threads on the right side as well.

KABarash--I'll let you know how it goes. Unfortunately, the shop didn't have it in stock (but they have had the part on order, even before I called). Must be a common problem!

They told me that they expect to have some in June. As soon as I get the part, I'll give you the update.

The throttle body is something TOTALLY different. Look it up.

:D

As for the threads, I'll suggest you get a windscreen then you can use whatever bolts you want and they both can be RH threads. I drilled and tapped mine for RH threads and used high quality chrome bolts.

Looks like you're on the right track but I'll add this for anyone else. I had a similar issue - broke off my right mirror stem and couldn't get it out of the switch assembly. I bought part 13 from this link:
http://www.scooterloungeonline.com/budd ... handmirror

These guys (generally) ship quickly though I've had one issue with no shipping / poor communication.

That part is only the half of the switch that the mirror screws into. There was no reason to replace both. It was a pretty simple replacement. Remove the screws and take the switch assembly apart then put the new half on. The only tricky part was keeping the throttle cable in its channel in the right place. First time I put the switch back together the cable got pinched. Second time I took more care and it was done.

Good luck!

This is what I have done so far, buying the case half from Scouterlounge. Now I am getting ready to replace it.

Could someone explain to me how do you disconnect the throttle cable from the case hand feed it through the new one?

I like to have an idea how it is before I take things apart.

Thank you for this thread. I was going nuts trying to figure out how I messed up the screw hole and even bought metal glue trying to fix it. Alas, I was screwing the mirror in the wrong way and didn't realize it is a reverse one.

My first scooter ever and I'm learning as I go along. Thanks everyone! :D
