Price too high?

Post by flavioguy »

I'm considering purchasing a 2013 Buddy 170i with very low mileage. Seller is asking $3,900. That seems at least $1K too high. Am I off base here? KBB is in the mid $2Ks.

Thanks!!

Yeah, they're trying to get their money back out of it. That's pretty unrealistic in this market. Folks who ask completely unrealistic prices like that are best left alone. They'll probably never negotiate and, if they do, they'll drag you to hell and back just to finally negotiate a price $300 above what you could get one for by simply browsing Craigslist for a couple minutes. Sometimes you just have to walk away...

Yes, new they are 3300. So you could get one with a 2 year warranty from a dealer for that money.

Well, not quite. New bikes sell for MSRP plus transport and setup. Having said that, I would only pay above KBB for a used bike in like new condition with accessories that I wanted. Even then I wouldn't go much above KBB.

Right, the dealer prep and taxes add on, but either way he's paying nearly brand new price (including prep/tax) for a (even slightly) used scooter. I'd walk away because the owner most likely won't go for what would be a legit offer.

Pretty sure I could buy a new one for $3200 plus tax right now. You have to pays sales on new or used.

Yes, you pay tax when you re-title/re-register, but it's based upon the stated sale value which most sellers will gladly understate on the bill of sale/title. My experience with the DMV here in NJ is that they're pretty savvy about car values, but totally clueless when it comes to bikes and scooters. You could probably state the value of a used Vespa946 at $150 and they wouldn't even bat an eye.

I was questioned about the low stated value on a scooter by the DMV when I took the title in for transfer and new tag.

"$50.00 seems mighty cheap for this Honda."

"Not really; it's all in 5 totes and I have to figure out if it's all there and put it together."

No more questions.

 That probably would work at the DMV! I have to remember that - "5 totes, figure out if it's all there."

Update for all you kind folks who responded!

The seller is now offering at $3K. After taxes and fees (in California they get ya comin' and goin') it would be ~3.4K. Scoot has 1.5 years left on warranty and 55 miles.

But the dealer is offering a brand new one for $3.7K OTD......

decisions, decisions.

Actually here's a BIGGER issue - it weighs more heavily than the price. Where I live it's 100 miles to the nearest Genuine dealer. That really concerns me if I need warranty service. Anyone have personal experience with this situation?!?! Recommendations??

Thanks again for your feedback!

Well, my experience with our Buddy was that it required no repairs during the warranty period.

My dealer is 35 miles away but I have had no problems with my 170i. He is going to reline my tug/hack for me soon. I trailer mine in if I need work done

Also, I don't believe the warranty is transferable.

I agree with Dooglas that you may never need the warranty. Are there other options in Palm Springs?

Syd.....Not for warranty service. I have a guy who works on my Piaggio MP3 and he could do any work just NOT warranty work.

BTW - has anyone every heard of a custom flat black Buddy 170i??? There's one for sale nearby but searches for more information come up blank.

Thanks as always folks.

I have not heard of a 170 i in flat black. The 125cc Buddy 'Psycho" scoot
was offered in 2012. Have a friend who has one and it is a real 'hot rod'. It
was a limited edition.

Offer him KBB retail. You won't need the warranty.

Whimscootie....thanks for the reply.

The wifey wants $3K......and you know what that means!! No budging. :-)

It doesn't matter much anyway.......

TOO ALL - I rode a Buddy 150 today and came away feeling it wasn't right for me. Rats.

I may look at a Blur 220i............bigger tires, different ergonomics.

Thanks all!

Is there an SYM dealer nearby? I rode an SYM HD200 for a few years and it is rock solid. 16" wheels, 171cc at 15bhp, handles great. Worth considering.

Syd...
I looked into the scoot (I've done a lot of research) but it is not fuel injected. Knocks it out of the running.

thanks for the suggestion nevertheless!

I'm leaning strongly towards the Honda PCX 150. I'm not crazy about some service maintenance schedule items but there are lots of other pluses.

Luckily for you, owners of the bike report doubling the inspection intervals and the valves still staying in spec. Got to love modern tech.

The new Piaggio Fly 150 3valve has longer maintenance intervals with a great price.

Brianwheelie....
Funny...that is still the other bike I'm considering BUT I can't find a used one as they are still so new to the market. I just cannot fathom the thought of paying all those dealer fees plus there are many used 2013 PCX 150s in the nearby area.
Plus the nearest Piaggio dealer is 50 miles from here. DANG!!

Thanks for throwing that out though.....I really do like the Piaggio (I own an MP3 400 now).

Later..

Honda scoots are bomb proof, very well made scoots. My dealer friends wife
has a Honda Big Ruckus that I would buy if I could talk her out of it.

All.....I'd like to close the story here.

Yesterday (2/1) I purchased a used 2013 Honda PCX 150 from Mid Cities Honda* (Paramount, CA) for $2,850 OTD (had 1500 miles). I rode it home (on surface streets) back to Palm Springs. Long ride. The scoot did better than me. I was exhausted after 5 hours of riding.

Thanks all for your information and support. Much appreciated.

Flavio / Palm Springs, CA

*FYI - Excellent buying experience from here for those of you in SoCal.
