First "long distance" ride.

Post by jrstone »

My wife and I are taking a trip on our scooters this weekend. We are riding from the Oklahoma City area to the Wichita Mountains in SW Oklahoma. I know it's not really all that far at about 130 miles one way. We've ridden more miles in a day than that before, but we've never ridden to anywhere that far away from home. I'm hoping this will be the first of many trips.

Oh the Wichita mountains are beautiful. Are you going up mt. Scott? Medicine park is a fun place to swim. Wish I was back in Oklahoma!

130 miles isn't so bad. That seat starts to wear on you after @ 50-60 at times. I would schedule a break at the midway point, get a snack, then onward!

Sounds like fun. I've enjoyed my visits to the Wichita Mountains, but stay away from the baby buffalo - it is difficult to outrun their mothers. Don't ask me how I know.

We are staying overnight in Medicine Park and yes, we are planning on going up Mt. Scott. I figure if a Stella can make it to Pikes Peak, we'll be fine!

I did a l00mi loop last weekend, if your seat is like mine, a break is needed...also, my SOM (scooter owners manual) recommends a break every hour anyway...check your, use it 'as a reason' to stop, break and chill.... 8)

We will probably stop halfway there and grab something to eat. I'm sure we will need a break before the scooters do. Luckily this weekend is supposed to be unseasonably cool for Oklahoma.

It can make it, just not at the speed limit :P. 14k feet is a bugger! Mt Evans too. Still really fun :P

The road to the top of Mt. Scott is about 3 miles with a 25mph speed limit. The climb is less than 900ft from the base to the top.

Nice! I like the bungee-backpack on your wife's scooter. Is that just a daypack? It doesn't look very big.

That's actually my camera bag. We had 2 very small backpacks that we packed our clothes and toiletries in. It was just an overnight stay.

I definitely recommend the Wichita Mountains for a weekend getaway (for anyone who lives close enough). Great roads and great views. I hadn't been there since I was about 10 years old.

The ride up Mt. Scott was well worth it. Scooters handled it easily at half throttle most the way. Coming back down with a CVT was a bit harder. Just coasted down the whole way and tried not to burn the brakes up.

They certainly aren't very tall mountains, but we do have a few.

 Hilarious!

Me too! I DID live in Oklahoma, but remember nothing about it. I was 2 years old and my dad was stationed there in the Army at Ft. Sill (sp?)

Anyway, it looks to be a beautiful state! Just gorgeous!

What an awesome trip!

No one has heard of the Tulsa Mountains? :D

Back in the 70s the "Ski the Tulsa Mountains" was a running joke on KRMG, a local talk radio station. It got even funnier when they began receiving calls from very angry people stating they had come to Tulsa on vacation to ski and there were no mountains here! Believe it or not, it happened quite a few times.

It is, indeed. I also have a Lowepro Slingshot 100 for when I don't feel like carrying a lot of gear. Great bags. Probably going to buy the smaller Flipside Sport 10l bag as well. They are amazingly comfortable, even when fully loaded.
