oil change interval Buddy 125

Post by Mike1nw »

I would like some clarification on the oil change interval.

On p. 25 of the owner's manual, there is a P.M. Table.
For the line "Engine Oil"it shows to REPLACE at 1 month or 300k. Farther along across that row, it states "Replace every 1000km".

Which is about 621 miles.

That's why, in another thread, I commented on changing the oil every 621 miles.

If someone believes there is another recommended interval, I would appreciate your input. Thanks

I wonder if you have an old version of the owners manual. What do you have on page 30? Mine has a table on page 30 saying to replace every 1800 miles.

Yes, that is the interval in my manual as well. It states 1800 miles for engine oil and 3600 miles for the oil filter (every 2nd oil change).

This manual in MB FAQs and Guides has the same maintenance table. http://www.modernbuddy.com/pdf/buddy_50 ... s-2012.pdf

AHA!

The manual that we have is much different than the one you linked.

1800 miles sounds more reasonable, although I am an over-maintainer for my vehicles.

Thanks 8)

if ya want an easier interval to remember...oil every 1500 miles & filter every 3000 miles; full synthetic oil could probably be stretched to every 2000 miles & filter every 4000 miles; I often change out early for my peace of mind and engine flushing purposes...
did anyone get the license plate number of the bus that just hit me?!?

As kmrcstintn commented, even 1800 miles is being cautious if you are using full synthetic oil.
My Vespa manual calls for full synthetic and recommends changing the oil every 6000 miles.
My nod to caution is to change annually if I don't hit the mileage trigger.

What is your Vespa's oil capacity?

I change mine every 1000 with an oil filter change every other oil change, or every year.

.... ... .... .. . I end up changing it once a year like most other small scooters

1300 cc total, as compared to 900 cc for the Buddy. But it is a 300 engine.

The discrepancy between 1,800 miles vs 6,000 miles is crazy.

The Vespa has 44% more oil capacity, so that could be part of it, but doesn't explain the whole difference.

Like you, I've always felt the change interval for the Buddy was extremely conservative. So I've stretched mine to around 2,500 miles with synthetic and haven't had a problem. It seems like that's still conservative.

How are you cramming 900 CC of oil in a 125. Left side drain plug, screen and new filter tops out at 27 ounces which is just under 800 cc.

I've always used 850 cc with a new filter and have never had a problem.

900 cc is the factory spec for the full capacity of a dry 125 (that compares to 1300 cc I quoted for the Vespa). My Buddy takes somewhere around 800-850 cc when I change the oil as there is always some residual.
