How big an air wrench do I need for the variator and clutch nuts?

I just bought a cheap impact gun (electric) from Harbor Freight.

Unless you're already invested in a pneumatic tool system (and if you were, you'd already have an impact gun) there isn't any need to start.

Either follow JK's advice and buy an inexpensive electric impact, or just do the job with hand tools.

For the variator nut, you need a pin wrench, under $15 on Amazon, and the proper socket and breaker bar.

For the clutch nut, this guy just c-clamps it to a table and uses hand tools.

If all you are after is something to get the variator and clutch nut off, you don't need to spend the money. Make one yourself out of a scrap piece of plywood and $3.00 of hardware. The advantage to a mechanical holder is you can torque the nuts upon re-installation.

DeeDee. I made that tool and it worked wonderfully and I thank you so much for the instructions. I used it to remove the variator nut and replaced the rollers and belt, then used it to remove the clutch nut. I did not want to buy anymore tools, like an impact wrench, which I would rarely use. I've kept the tool in case I need it again.
