Starter won't catch

My 2012 Stella starter stopped working. It just whirs. I have to kick-start it. (Thank goodness for the kick-starter!) Is this something I can fix? I know a little about engines.
I've never worked on a Stella engine, but if the starter motor has a centrifugal clutch to engage the starter motor pinion to the engine during startup, the clutch may not be functioning correctly.
