Handheld GPS
Just wanted to find out if anyone is using GPS's? What kind, where do you mount it, etc.
I went to Best Buy yesterday, and looked...and I really don't want something that's going to say "Turn Left" over and over...I decided what I wanted to do was plot my course, set waypoints, see my real speed, etc.
I found this on eBay, and got it for $60...is this one decent?

I use a Magellan Meridian in both my car and on the scoot. Also use it for geocaching.
Speaking of GPS's...I have one that I bought my GF but it's not advanced enough. No roads or basemap.
But it's perfect for geocaching, checking your speed and doing waypoint stuff.
Put it up for sale on Craigslist, but now I figure why not share with my Scooter World?
Listed it for $90 there (originally $115 - has been opened and turned on, but that's it). Will sell to Buddy owner for $75ish. Definitely negotiable.
Will post on the For Sale area now.

Garmin
I've seen a whole bunch of threads here but not one has shown how to mount a Nuvi (I have a 600) Garmin onto a Buddy. Looks like the Ram ones would need a lot of modifications... anyone do this... have a pic??
Thanks!

Re: Garmin
Use Dual Lock tape. It's like Velcro, but about a billion times stronger. I use it to keep my license plate on. No issues so far - and I've got 1500+ on Scootle.Glen G wrote:I've seen a whole bunch of threads here but not one has shown how to mount a Nuvi (I have a 600) Garmin onto a Buddy. Well, I finally received my Garmin 76s...the eBay auction TITLE said "Hardly Used Garmin GPS".....heh! This thing looks like he threw it into a fishing tackle box for a year or so! Scratched display, case, paint chipped all over the place...ewwwww....even the box was nasty - looked like "fish juice" on it (but didn't smell).
What are people thinking when they say "Hardly Used"? To me that sounds like "I bought it, and hardly used it, so it's in fantastic condition", right?
Anyway, I played with it for about 10 minutes, then went to the Garmin site...nothing to download, no maps but the basemaps...and that only shows the major roads. So I don't think this is going to do what I want - which is to show my tracks, plan routes, etc. I emailed him and said I want to send it back for a refund based on the terrible condition he did not disclose...hopefully I won't get hosed.
I really don't care for turn-by-turn commentary, but I'm thinking about getting the Tom-Tom because it seems like it is more popular for a low-end GPS (under $200)...but what I want to know is if I have to mount it up on the handlebars, or if I can just leave it in the front glovebox? I don't need to be distracted while I'm riding...I can always pull over to play with it, but I do want to make sure that I won't lose the satellites for tracking.
If I do need to mount it, what's the best way to do it and where? I saw the post about velcro and sticky-tape, but where did you actually mount it (show a pic).

Garmin ETrex - I've had one since about 2000 or so, that mounts up with a handlebar bracket.
It's survived rain, heat, crashes that sent it skidding down the highway, voltage overload....
You can probably find older models really cheap.

+1. The base model Etrex is cheap and not for sale on their site anymore.
They are all over Ebay, although I am sure you are leery of that now.
Ebay Search: Etrex (this search comes up with ALL the Garmin handhelds).
I lost my Etrex on a canoe trip this past week.
So I am either going to replace it with the same model from Ebay. or the Etrex Venture which is the same as the base Etrex with a color screen and it has maps (base Etrex does not... I don't need maps).
Last Garmin option, imo for a scooterist, is the Etrx Legend model. B&W but has streets.
Can't go wrong with any of them from the cheapest to the priciest. They are well built quality devices.

There's no exposed handlebar. How did you mount it to the handlebar? Or did you have to cut through the top housing? I'd like to find a way to mount that didn't require cutting the housing or sticky tape. I suppose I want the impossible.StL_Stadtroller wrote:Garmin ETrex - I've had one since about 2000 or so, that mounts up with a handlebar bracket.

I should say... the handlebars on my motorcycles. The only time I've used it on the Buddy was when I jammed it into the rain bucket to check speedometer error.k1dude wrote:There's no exposed handlebar. I've spent more money, and it's you people's fault. FYI, walmart.com has the eTrex Vista HCx for $195 and the Legend HCx for $204 Iwhich seems a little backward, as the Vista has barometer/altimeter and a higher MSRP). I ordered my Vista last night and it's going to get here tomorrow. The link shows the base model eTrex and Legend, too.

Keep in mind - the base map only has major roads.. to get full detail you have to buy the Garmin map suite (MapView?) and a dongle to connect the ETrex to your computer for download of maps, waypoints, tracks, etc.
One really cool thing I was able to do was download my "tracks" from my rides through Colorado and plot them out on Garmins Topo maps in all kinds of crazy 3-D detail for viewing fun at home.

From what I've been able to tell, the models with "H" have a higher-sensitivity receiver, the ones with "C" have a color screen, and I dunno what the "x" means. The City Navigator road maps are another $80 new on eBay, so if you might want a real road map you should budget for it. They come either on CD or a SD/micro card. Check the models you're interested in to make sure it has a card slot. A lot of the eTrex packages come with 128MB SD cards, which is kinda stupid because I bought 512MB microSD cards about six months ago for ten bucks apiece. If you spring for the maps, the etrex will function like the bigger ones, just via beeps instead of yelling at you.

The H is the closest to my old one. Looks the same. They all have Altitude but a barometer? Never saw that beofre. That's pretty slick.twoscoots wrote: as the Vista has barometer/altimeter and a higher MSRP).

Glovebox works fine. The only issue is seeing the readout on the GPS in the shadows.7eregrine wrote:Get a Garmin Etrex. That's all you need for a scoot.
The glovebox probably doesn't work. Not a clear enough view of the sky from inside there. Not sure though.
But my Magellan Meridian gets a fine signal from there.
**I still have a GPS to sell. It's the eXplorist 100. It IS in brand-new condition but has been opened and turned on.
Asking $75. Retails for $114 or so. PM me.
