Roughhouse air filter replacement

Post by dkw12002 »

I was looking at on-line info about the Roughhouse and there was someone talking about the air filter. Said there is a foam gasket that gave them trouble putting the cover back in place properly. Has anyone experienced a problem putting the cover back on?

The gasket is a little fiddly but not terrible. I have had mine open a few times and it really isn't too hard to get back together. That said, it is not really a very good design. They could have done better without much or any cost penalty.

Thanks. It sounds like the foam gasket is flimsy or the groove or whatever that holds it in place is doesn't allow it to seat and stay in one place so well. I'll take my time. I do wish it was a foam filter instead of paper though. Vespa uses a foam filter and you never really have to buy another filter...just wash, dry, oil and re-use. Actually it was the filter itself on the Vespa which you had to keep in place just right to get the cover back on properly. There is no additional foam seal, but it takes up the entire air box. Looks like the paper filter for the Roughhouse is just in the middle and nowhere near the cover, hence a gasket. Somebody probably does make a foam re-usable filter that fits a Roughhouse or can be made to fit it. Also seldom are these filters unique to one model. My Metro could use a Briggs and Stratten lawnmower filter which was exactly the same as the Honda metro oem filter.

I took mine out. The bugger was more of a problem putting back in, since ditching it have not experienced any difficulties.

How many miles on your 09 Roughhouse agrogod? What problems if any have you had with it? Curious what's in store for me besides changing the air filter.

Hi dkw12002, there's 1900 mi. on the beast. And other than a small oil leak that has developed around the oil sump and hard starting after winter layup, there is not much wrong with it. I did have a small problem with the upper cylinder in which the piston warped, but that was a fluke I am sure, as I have not read of anyone else with the same problem.

The only real difference between the '09 and the '14 is the carb.. The '09 has a non adjustable idle mix.
