Googlemap your routes...

Post by un_designer »

Hey I'm thinking it may be fun to googlemap routes that we take often, to see if others take the same route... I'll start. Below is my work commute. I take the bus to work but once in a while I'll take the scooter.

And here's going grocery shopping...

It would be interesting to see if others go to the same gentlemen clubs I do.

Me googling my expected commute would be a series of 1 mile paths from my apartment - trips to the market, the Jack in the Box, RiteAid, my favorite hole-in-the-wall coffee shop (The Way Station - get the Kris Special, it's AWESOME!). The longest commute would be to where I work and that would be a little under 4 miles.

Yeah, It would be neat to see crosspaths and overlaps.. While I don't have any daily commutes I can be seen in this region. I have seen QUITE a bit of scooters on 101 going down to UCSD as well as just out and about in Encinitas. It would be cool to find out they are also on MB!

Yes, it's fast. No, you can't ride it.

My AM Commute

My PM Commute (different due to traffic patterns)

The little jogs are to avoid having to wait at several VERY long lights. If I don't avoid those lights, it can seriously add like 10-15 minutes (effectively double) the time of my commute.

Sometimes though, when it's really nice out and I have the time, or need the Zen, I go home THIS WAY.
90-100 Miles, 2 ferry crossings, and the Great River Road. one of my favorite rides in the whole area.

A twist on the original idea: what about a single map that we can all edit (Google Maps allows that right?) that's like, "Roads Claimed in the Name of Modern Buddy!"

That way we could really all see where people overlap. (Where there's overlap, all members riding that area can share credit for the conquest.)

In other words, how about this:

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&m ... 30963006bc

(note: it's unlisted so we don't have random yahoos editing it. but anyone can edit it, if they have the link to it.)

There's a "Link" button at the top right of the map that will generate a URL for the map with your route. These are always very long, so I use TinyURL.com or Snurl.com to shorten it.

So how do you add your map to the list?

I think before you add in your route(s) you have to click the "Edit" button in the left pane next to the "Collaborate" link. (If you don't see these links, look for double-right arrows near the top and click on those to expand the left-side pane). Then add your routes, and click "Save" and then "Done."

At least, this is how I edit my own maps and I think it's the same for collaborative editing. Let me know if this doesn't work...

you also have to be logged into your google account in order to see the links greencountry described above. otherwise you won't be able to add your route to the map.

Kaos! YOU ARE A STUD! That is a freaking unreal commute! How many miles have you racked up so far?

I work at Tektronix so we end up right next to each other! I'm afraid of messing up the google map so I haven't added mine yet, but I will figure it out... I'm coming from Hillsboro however, so we don't cross paths.

Do you head into that loop in Beaverton for coffee or to just rest your bum? MAN, that is a long commute!

US 12 is a great route, but I've only done it in a cage. Of course, it is the route between two casinos

AH! Thanks... That did it (and it explains Kaos' weird jaunt through the Beaverton Police HQ parking lot every day!)

Heh, I've got 6500 miles on my Buddy since March :) Its about 50 miles round trip a day. And no, the loop through the Beaverton police station is intentional, theres a coffee shop there :)

EDIT: Broke: Thats kinda funny, we end up within blocks of eachother, and never cross paths :)

 Yeah, we definitely don't lack for casinos in this area.
I actually detoured off of US 12 a bit, through the residential area of Beverly Shores and the drive right along the shores of Lake Michigan. A very nice little drive.

My only concern with route 12 is all the damn deer. It's bad enough to hit one while in your car ... I don't think I care to tangle with one while on a scooter.

Tell me more about that ride to Downtown via Zoo Dr. It sounds like the most awesome awful drive of all time. I imagine it takes double the time compared to the freeway.

Added my daily commute to the shared map. Most of the rest of my driving would be just a scribble around most of the roads in a 3 mile radius of home. Suffice to say I'm the only St. Tropez I've seen in the SW part of Houston so far, but it doesn't look like my fellow Houstonians are joining in on this thread yet.

Ok I managed to figure out that I needed to add a line rather than click the get directions from here to here so I added my commute to the community map.

Newslinky, is that your commute every day? I think you beat Kaos' commute! I *wish* I had such an excuse to ride the Buddy every day... :?

I posted directions in the description of the map, hopefully that reduces confusion.
