Posted: Mon Feb 23, 2009 8:29 pm Post subject: NEW Member Map! |
|
|
Our old member map crapped out at 500 entries and I've finally gotten around to creating a new one.
http://www.zeemaps.com/modernbuddy.com
I was able to import info from the old map; if you want to change an old entry (blue markers on the map) or create a new one, let me know and I'll delete the old one.
To view the map and add yourself, you'll need to enter a "key," which is in the image at the bottom of this post. This is to limit viewing to forum members.
When you visit the map, you'll get a popup asking you to unlock it. Click the unlock map link and enter the key in the image at the bottom of this post. The "Mail Keys" button just sends the keys to me. This post is the only place to find the key! It's a little complex, but it's to prevent spamming and protect members' privacy.
To see markers without having to scroll around, go to View, then select List. There's also a search function, but it seems a bit wonky (possibly because I've been making a lot of bulk changes to the database.)
Adding a new entry
Go to Additions menu at the top, then Add Marker.
Location tab
Title: your username, please
Address: The best way to get this positioned right is to click "Map Select a location," a popup comes up, click "Okay," then click an approximate location on the map. It will auto-enter the location (you won't see the location marker yet, but can see it enter latitude and longitude).
You can try using your street address, zip, etc. but a few people have reported problems doing it this way. I'm testing it and emailing their support. Be sure to enter the complete address, city, country, state, zip, everything, if you're doing it this way.
Your address info, even when entered, does not display on the map.
Color: Members, please use default (red). Dealers, please select purple.
Details tab
Description: A shoutout, tagline, whatever. (Mine reads: "ModernBuddy.com Admin. Scootering NoHo, LA, SoCal and beyond!")
Dealers should include the word "dealer" as well as their address in their description. This will make it easier to search for you and locate your shop.
(all other info is optional)
Media tab
Select a pic to add. Avatar (square) works best.
Let's leave off the audio and video to keep this simple, please.
Click Submit when complete.
A popup give you a URL to edit your entry, but I've disabled member editing for now. If you need to make changes, let me know here or via PM.
Map features:
You can view a list of all the members added to the map and search for members by name or location. (This does not include Old Map entires—another reason to have me delete yours so you can add another one.)
Admins/Moderators can create route maps.
I'm sure we'll come up with some other fun stuff to do with this.
Nearby markers are grouped (blue dots). You can click the dot to see all the entries in that group or zoom in to see the individual ones. Neat. _________________ Eric // Flickr group // LA Scooter Meetup Group // twitter: @scooterism // ScooterFile

For now, I can either delete you and let you re-add or you can wait for me to see if I can write a script to reformat the old map entries from KML to CSV. I am a GREPmaster supreme. _________________ Eric // Flickr group // LA Scooter Meetup Group // twitter: @scooterism // ScooterFile

It's not the most intuitive system. The code (or "key") is in the image at the bottom of the first post. When you you first visit the page, you should get a prompt:
"This is a private map. Please unlock map to view map markers. Click on a marker to view more information.
See more details, or modify markers, after you [color=blue]unlock this map[/unlock]."
Click one of the links that says "unlock" and you'll be prompted to enter the map key.
If that doesn't work or if you don't get the right prompt, you can try the "unlock" link in the top right of the window.
If that doesn't work, it could be some kind of browser compatibility issue. Upgraded lately? _________________ Eric // Flickr group // LA Scooter Meetup Group // twitter: @scooterism // ScooterFile

Hey, can you just scrap mine so I can move it since I don't live there anymore? I can't figure out how to change it, it'd be easier to do a new one anyway. _________________

ericalm;
For some reason I am listed twice, rajron with killer bunny (correct location), and rajron killer bunny (wrong location). They are right next to each other but the more southern location is incorrect. That will bring our count down to 8 for our area, down from 9.

It's better to use the "Map Select a location" feature and click a spot on the map where you want the marker rather than entering your address. Want me to delete your marker again? Cuz I will. _________________ Eric // Flickr group // LA Scooter Meetup Group // twitter: @scooterism // ScooterFile

Ok, I skipped over that part before, so I fixed it! Now there are 2 of me, they are the only 2 Italia green markers on the map. The one to the southwest is the one I want to keep, please remove the other one for me!
EDIT: Thanks, now I'm all set. I also emailed myself the link for editing, so I won't have to bother you if I need to change anything! _________________

Add me to the list of those that screwed things up. I ended up with 4 Robs listed from all over the world. You can kill all of them other than the one in Munster, IN ... although I'm sure there are a few that would like to do that one in too.

I am officially over trying to get my correct address to show up. The map put me on some random street that has nothing to do with my address. I can't even delete my icon.

Looks like a bunch of people from the old map just used their first names, not their usernames, so we have a few Robs. I moved you to Munster, no specific address.

Yeah, looks like clicking on the map to get the location (see my advice for KrustyBurger, above) works much better than entering an address. Even though it's based on GoogleMaps, the addresses aren't resolving correctly.
I'm going to see if I can get it to work and am going to email their support team.
Meanwhile, should I delete your marker? _________________ Eric // Flickr group // LA Scooter Meetup Group // twitter: @scooterism // ScooterFile

I didn't even see how to mark the map directly but I wasn't looking for it either so I'm sure that is why. Please delete mine and I will try again.

Yeah, not the best interface out there. I looked at a couple of different mapping products, though, and this was the one that would let me import the old entries and edit them as well as do bulk edits.
Your marker is deleted.
Just added to the Instructions (this works for me):
You can try using your street address, zip, etc. but a few people have reported problems doing it this way. I'm testing it and emailing their support. Be sure to enter the complete address, city, country, state, zip, everything, if you're doing it this way. _________________ Eric // Flickr group // LA Scooter Meetup Group // twitter: @scooterism // ScooterFile

Now you need to color-code the pins to scooter color, and make special pins for Blurs, BKs, RTs, and RHs.

Yeah, I tried to search for it, but sadly they didn't put a username.... Now I'll never know who that is unless I become all stalker-ish and ride past their house

Eric,
Would you delete me? My old marker was never in the right place anyway (out in Sand Springs).... I also tried adding a marker in the correct location and didn't put in my name or any information! Go ahead and delete the "No Name" marker in Tulsa OK too....
thanks,

Here's something odd about the list organization: all the capitalized names are before all those which aren't. So it's alphabetical, capitalized names first, uncapped ones following. You're in page 6 of the list. _________________ Eric // Flickr group // LA Scooter Meetup Group // twitter: @scooterism // ScooterFile

Thats not so bad. It has me living in some marshland right next to some railroad tracks. I guess if you don't supply your address, it finds a proper home for you. I think I'm going to like it there.

There we go, I'm on there.
Now you can see how close Armacham, Becktastic, and I live to each other.

Would you delete me? My old marker was never in the right place anyway (out in Sand Springs).... I also tried adding a marker in the correct location and didn't put in my name or any information! Go ahead and delete the "No Name" marker in Tulsa OK too....
thanks,
byron (pugbuddy in Tulsa OK) |
Thats not so bad. It has me living in some marshland right next to some railroad tracks. I guess if you don't supply your address, it finds a proper home for you. I think I'm going to like it there.

Actually, I think yours was off by a lot—out in the Atlantic—and I moved it to your city. |
Ha. Depending on where I was in the Atlantic, that might not have been so bad. Thanks for fixin' things.

Eric:
Could you remove my old marker "Bing" in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia? I would like to create a new marker!
Thanks! _________________ ~ Bing

It's there, right above my sig. You have to be logged on to view it. I'll PM it to you if you can't see it for whatever reason.
