Only a moderator can stop them, the site will continue to be spammed to death until a moderator or Eric comes on. Too bad there's no way to "vote" ban them from the site when no moderator/administrator is logged on.

Unfortunately, it's a bit more complicated than that. We can ban a user and a spammer can make another user name. We can ban an IP address and a spammer can post from another IP address.

Spammers are hard to stop. But there are possibly some other tools Eric can use to slow them down. We did have a pretty big hit overnight/early this morning. I think it was something like 25 or so posts in a matter of a few hours. I know because I got to delete a decent number of them!!! But that's pretty rare.

We're working on it!! In the meantime, apparently the spammer has a great deal on some Russian SMS recovering system and if you're interested I can hook him/her up with your email address!!!

Banning all the IP's from an entire country would prevent quite a few future scooter people from discovering something wonderful.

Besides, spammers take advantage of forums from any country's IP's. Banning russia wouldn't help.

I couldn't sleep last night and logged on around 3am or so. They had posted five different times in the general discussion and once in all other sub forums. The thing is this stuff happens to all forums. I think this forum is very clean but there is only so much you can do. I just wish I knew what it said, no fun in another language.

This is a great forum; very rarely do spammers get very far along in the site – I was at a tender moment and just started to yip and snip out loud.
Thanx for the clean up.

We take 'em out quick as we can! I think most of us would rather put up with the occasional spam thread than have to enter in Captcha words every time we post. If you see spam, please don't reply to it; report it using the report button: Image

These things seem to come in waves—we'll go months with no spam—so it should die down soon. If not, I'll look into other prevention options.

I always ban their usernames and IP addresses—in fact, I ban a whole range of IPs. Unfortunately, the spammers have learned to spoof their IPs which seemingly come from different locations.

What's stupid (and how we know that they're Russian) is that the recent posts are in Cyrillic. Anyone here read Cyrillic Russian? No? Thought so.

At least we're not getting the hardcore p0rn posts. We had some really disturbing images posted here.

I doubt you'd have clicked on the links for this anyway. ;)

My guess is that they are google bombing. It doesn't matter that we cannot read the post, they are posting text associated with a link so that google ranks the website higher.

Makes more sense than simply spamming a website in a manner that 99% of us cannot read.

I activated the the feature requiring new members to reply to email when they register to activate their accounts. We'll see if that helps. As is, they have to enter Captcha words to register… We can only hope they're using fake email addresses.

Tried tracing IPs to a single source—nope. They're all over the place. Crafty Russky spammers.

It is Russian now that I had a chance to see it. They are advertising/spamming some kind of a proggie or whatever that allows retrieval of information from cell phone (like spying on GF, or BF, etc). Spammers definitely. I asked how we knew they were Russians because I did not catch the original posts before they were removed. Pure spam. We are lucky we did not get "girly" adds.

Ha! They even use one of Reagan's famous quotes in their message. Now that's funny coming from a Russian.

Actually the saying is very old, very , very common in Russia. It sounds better in Russian actually :P .I suspect Reagan deliberately used translation of an old Russian saying to make a point.
