pulling a cart

Post by deserthealer »

i am only a few $ away from my 1st scooter and as of now Buddy is on top of the the list (in part to this great forum). My question is this: can you pull a flat bed cart, like some bikes, on the back of Buddy? I ask because I do a small newspaper route and would love to save on the gas, wear and tear, etc... on my car. The route is 250 miles a week.

Thanks for any ideas.

I don't know a whole lot about scooters, engineering, or physics , but that said, I think you would be better off with a side car.I dont think they could turn real well with a bike-like cart. maybe you could put a removable milk crate basket on the front and back?

Wouldn't the front basket be more functional for a paper route?
Something within reach.

Not sure what state you live in. But here in Connecticut you need a plate on any trailer. Has to be DOT approved, have a vin number and come with a certificate of origin.

You might want to see if you can track down a PAV trailer. From Czech Republic and haven't been made in almost 50 years.
Very rare and will cost you a bundle. I have been looking for one with no luck. :(

A sidecar would be perfect!

I think peabody99 needs a cart because he/she needs to delivery quite a bit of newspapaer (250/5 = 50 or 250/7= 36 miles per day) Using a front basket will require him to go back to the newspaper drop point quite a bit. Never seen a cart-towing bike though... that sounds scary.

it is actually deserhhealer that needs the cart. I can nearly fit a twelve pack under the seat just fine, thank you!

Wouldn't this be like pulling a camper trailer behind your car? :?
I would think that it would be possible to jackknife.

you might be right about jack-knifing. I have no idea since I never had a scooter. If I can make this work I would save a ton on gas. My car gets 25mpg, plus wear and tear.

I do appreciate everyone's imput!

I have known of a fella with a Bajaj Legend who had a trailer built for his scooter and used it to tow his sailboat to the beach. Another guy regularly pulls a trailer with his Honda Helix. There is no reason you couldn't do it. Check out any Harley or Gold Wing that pulls a trailer. The only concern is how to mount the ball. It will HAVE to be affixed to the frame in some way. Not the engine/swingarm assembly. Also, I'lm not too sure how the belt-drive variator will hold up under large-load conditions like that.
