OK. here's my take on this, because I think mine was improperly installed by the dealer and I gather these things don't come with instructions.
Mine came from Ducati of Seattle with the Genuine rear rack and the topcase installed to that, but it seemed a bit cockamamie and there was a multitude of parts and bolts loose in the case. The case was attached with some bolts running thru holes in the bottom of the topcase down to some brassy looking brackets on the bottom side of the rack, but there was a large black plate loose inside the topcase with some threaded holes that lined up with the holes in the bottom of the topcase. So I took everything apart and installed the black bracket on top of the rear rack using the long bolts and brassy brackets underneath the rack. Then I attached the topcase to the black plate using the shorter bolts and dished washers and it fit great and looks correct. If anyone has any other method that looks more solid, let me know.
And Gabe or Dave at Ducati of Seattle, if you read this and it sounds correct, how about letting your assembly folks know and gimme a break on my 200m oil change?!!! In my other life, I'm Gary who purchased the red Buddy on 8-4. _________________ Capt. Spaulding

Genuine’s top cases don’t come with installation instructions. Fortunately the owner of Fun On Wheels showed me how the top case should be installed otherwise I shutter to think of the jury-rigged monstrosity that I would have assembled. The way that you installed your Genuine top case sounds correct or at least it is the same way that I installed it.
