Re: No Outlet Signage

Post by pavelgee »

I drove around the three notorious areas that are littered with Dead End signs in Brooklyn in hopes of finding a No Outlet sign today, to no avail. I did come across one peculiar <-->Through Way sign near Brooklyn College on Ave I, which was a dead end in a block after that. I saw Dead End Street a few times, but no sign of the No Outlet sign

Then I came across this on Wikipedia:
We tell New Yorkers the truth: it's a 'dead end' wrote:In New York City, as of 2008, there were 4,659 "dead end" traffic signs, along with 160 "no outlet" signs. The city records, which go back to the 1960s, show only a couple "no exit" signs once existing near the approaches to the Midtown Tunnel, and which are no longer there. "We hear that some towns use 'no outlet' instead of 'dead end' because they think it sounds less morbid", New York City Commissioner of Transportation Janette Sadik-Khan said in 2008. "We tell New Yorkers the truth: it's a 'dead end', and we think that motorists get the point quickly."

Bah! That sounds like typical New Yorker bravado!

(Now, with tongue removed from cheek.) What does New York call a street that has several other streets branching from it, say the entrance to a gated community? It's not really a dead end, because you can go all over. But you can't get out from the gated community, so No Outlet is perfectly descriptive.

As a native of Suffolk County, you'll find thousands of "no outlets" out that way, if you're up for a 2 hour ride east.

Heya and thank you :D. I'm slightly embarrassed at my dirty whitewalls, but thrilled to be playing. Seriously. I was so excited I knew where a rotary (some call it roundabout) was. Do you mean the helmet in my avatar? I think it is my Bell Shorty Rally, oh no wait - its a Fulmer.

w00t! FINALLY got a tag. :D

The piggy from John's Roast Pork in the heart of scenic and fragrant South Philly

Tag, you're it! Post a photo of your scooter in front of some WHEATPASTE graffiti. This one here is by none other than Shepard Fairey.

I just rode all over Providence for almost two hours, trying to find some paper posters pasted unceremoniously on a random wall, worksite, abandoned factory, nightclub entrance, hipster hangout and I came up empty-handed. I cannot believe that Providence doesn't do proper paper postering. Most of the posters I saw were taped with clear packing tape to storefronts advertising boxing matches or evangelical church services. The lack of posters is something I never noticed; just one more reason that PVD isn't a real city.

So here's what I came up with. I figured poli can referee. It's a Shepard Fairey commission but done in paint, not paper. I'll not post a new tag to give someone a shot at the real deal and await poli's decision.

I did have a nice ride, going through good and bad neighborhoods (including my own!) and Roger Williams Park. It was a weird way to ride, constantly scanning for posters and not attending all that closely to the traffic.

On the one hand, my intention was to see some cool wheatpaste graffiti art in a city other than Philly. On the other hand, I was trying to take a photo in front of this one piece with Ben Franklin holding a boombox, but there was no place to park and too much traffic to get the shot. Scooter tag is really challenging!

Two hours? You are one dedicated player, siobhan! I think you earned the right to pick the next tag. :D

I certainly haven't scooted over there yet.
My buddy runs a phone repair/game store in Innwood - I need to pay him a visit on my scoot:) Thanks for the idea.

And, Firefighter, who knows, maybe soon enough I'll make my way over to Long Island proper.

I googled wheatpaste graffiti for something in the Phx area. Nothing. I googled Shepard Fairey phoenix and fond one reference to some of his posters pasted as advertising for a show earlier in the year. One building has been torn down, the other has been repainted. But I guess that's to be expected with street art.

Yah, thanks poli! I can't complain about having to ride around as the weather was sunny in the 70s and it was a good stress reliever as I'm ramping up for the start of semester.

NEW TAG...your scoot with a horse. In this case that's an actual working police horse.

Right, it's like cherry blossoms -- fleeting! One of the things I like most about graffiti is the underground/subculture nature of the art form. Google won't be all that helpful for this. Flickr fared slightly better, but the three sets I found were very old:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/m1a1/tags/wheatpaste/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/schlabotni ... heatpaste/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/davidbessent/tags/phoenix/

Really, the best way to find graffiti is to go out and look for it. That's how I find the ones I see here. Another way would be to follow folks who post their work (or photos of other artists' work) on Twitter or another social media website, but that's not nearly as satisfying as coming across a fresh new piece of art during my morning commute. Happy hunting! :D

How's that for an angel from Dyker Heights?
Took me a while, but I combed the neighborhood (not mine, btw) and was rewarded 8)

And here's the tag back -- above a highway (I know I am all about roads, bridges, highways...). Let me know I can easily change it (have pictures to choose from) :?:

Not to hijack this tag, but I was so proud of my horse photo, I wanted to share it anyway. This stallion was so fascinated by me that he/she was staring at me the whole time! What a beautiful creature. Anyway, back to the original thread. I raced home with this one, and someone beat me to the punch. I did take another tag photo, which I'll share later on. I was planning on taking a boat photo for my next tag, but the marina was a little out of my way and I was pressed for time. Nice idea, good minds think alike! And good to see some new aggressive players on here, time for me to step up my game a little bit

I swung by a marina on my way home yesterday, but all the sailboats were packed up for Irene. Which leads me to the next tag, your scooter IN A HURRICANE!

Image

Just kidding. I did spot a nice big tugboat though (the only things out on the water the day before the storm). So continuing on the theme of boats, next tag: Tugboat.

***My thoughts go out to all those affected by Hurricane Irene. Providence was spared severe damage--just some downed trees and power outages.***

I tried to get the same exact tug as Quezzie during a hurricane, but the cops had the street closed off and my boyfriend banned me from going out until 3pm. Even with that, a few gusts really grabbed the bike and dragged me out of my lane. Thankfully there was almost no traffic. Like after the rapture! I don't recommend riding around in this kind of wind unless you're a bit mad.

Here's the tug Gaspee at India Point Park, Port of Providence.

Another shot with cop SUV headed toward me, blaring over the loud speaker that I should "get out of here!"

And I thought it crazy enough to go out before the storm! A guy in a truck was just staring at me while I took photos in the wind and rain. Thankfully, Providence was spared much damage, but my thoughts go out to those who fared worse from Irene.

Also, totally thought of tagging the Seaplane plane sometime too! I love that place. :D

Addition: Glad you're ok from actually taking the scooter out in the wind, I took a walk around 3pm and a couple good gusts nearly knocked me off my feet.

Oops, sorry about that. I put it in the subject line but I guess it got buried.

"Post subject: New tag: your scoot at a diner"

I think a seaplane would be difficult unless there's something really weird going on in the world of seaplanes that doesn't involve water.

I tried to recreate the Seaplane, but it was later in the day and the sun came from behind. The only shot I could get where the scoot wasn't just a black shadow:

To be fair, I have a photo of another great diner, the Liberty Elm! Unbeatable breakfast (but unfortunately closed on Mondays). Can't pick a favorite dish, everything is yummy here, and comes with little paper umbrellas.

Going with the Rhode Island kick, next tag is: your scooter and an oversized insect! This is Nibbles Woodaway:

Eeee he's peering at the scoot.

Blue color is optional, and includes real insects that may land on your scooter, or large pictorial bugs!

Those look pretty cool. Freshmen moved in today so my life is on the roller coaster to hell for the next few weeks.

sorry to be a bastard, but I had my mind set on getting this. I didn't think anyone would find an insect so quickly, so I didn't think I had to expedite this one. Going out of town this weekend, planned to get it when I got home, but you forced my hand Syd  Nice bug statues, btw.

May I present, Louise Bourgeois' "Spider" at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden.

Nice! I had my eye on riding down to the Embarcadero this weekend, where we have a Louise Bourgeois spider as well! One of these days I'll get in on the game, because I love the pics! Although, is it ok if it's a Stella and not a Buddy?

sorry to be a bastard,
Yeah? Well you've got a funny way to show it, Buddy!

Ha! All's fair in love and Tag. But, it saves me a long ride on a hot day, so I guess I should thank you. Have a good weekend!

P.S. Monkeykat, you've got your quote /quote tags goofed up.

Thanks for pointing that out, don't want to mis-quote. All those years of software development haven't left me impervious to tagging mistakes.

No problem. I do it often myself. (And it's not like I wasn't thinking "you bastard, BSFF!")

Absolutely! All scooters are welcome. I love scooter tag. I haven't had a chance to participate much recently, but I'm also gonna try to better keep up.
