Charger Outlet On Buddy 125?

Post by DKAudio »

I always come across people writing about the charger outlet on their Buddy's. I swear my 2009 Buddy 125 does not have one. It is normally located in the front compartment under the handlebars, right? Did they not do this on the 09 125?

DK, It's on the left side (driver's POV) , straight up from the fattest part of the storage bin. It will have a rubber cap.

PGO calls it the cell phone 'charging seat'. Photo on page 5 of the manual, found here: http://www.modernbuddy.com/pdf/Genuine_ ... 25-150.pdf

Post a pic of your headlight. The 06 models were the only year with the proper headlight and no outlet.

Mine doesn't have one. I even took off the front plastic to see if there is wiring and there isn't. My Buddy is an 09 125, don't get it. Do you still want to see a picture of my headlight for some reason?

Seeing the headlight would help determine whether your bike is really a 2009, or a 2006 (possibly unused-but-old stock when you bought it).

i would think looking at the scoot's title would tell you the year of the scoot, regardless of when it was bought.

Dude...we're trying to help...post a pic of your headlight. You would be amazed at how many bikes are registered by the wrong year.

This is the first I have ever heard of a Buddy other than an 06 not having an outlet.

Definately after market mirrors. Maybe changed headset? Often cracked if dropped.

No way - That headlight is clearly an '07 or later.

And, yes, Sunset buddy is the '06 in my pic.

I was wondering that too but usually it's just the top that gets cracked when dropped.

And yeah...the short stems were the giveaway! :D I have one spare. One of the originals had a bad cast and broke.

Plug the VIN FROM THE VEHICLE (not from the title) into vindecoder.net to make sure it's a 2009.

Okay he posted a pic if his headlight. Now someone needs to post a picture of the front wiring so he can compare the contents.

If for some reason the headset and headlight are from a 2007+ and the body indeed has no charger jack (usually means 2006), it might be a first in-the-wild BuddyBodge.

SonnyD, where'd you see 'new' ones with no jack?

Hey, DK, you buy this thing new / 0mi?

I have a picture of both sides in this thread (see picture 19/20, and the picture following that as well), if it helps.

In picture 19 it's the item on the top right.

I have owned three 2008 and 2009 Buddy 125s, and all had the 12-volt outlet come standard. Weird that one of either of those years would come with out it...

I bought this early 2012 used.

The variator cover has the Genuine Scooter Company logo.

I replaced the mirrors with some Ebay ones after the stock ones started dangling and got loose.

I checked the stem VIN and put it in vindecoder, 2009 origin Taiwan Provence of China (Asia).

There isn't even a knockout in the plastic molding for a charger outlet, it is smooth.

Man, that's weird. It's almost like someone replaced the back legshield plastic with an 06 piece that didn't have the socket. But maybe I'm hearing hoofbeats and thinking zebras instead of horses. No taped-off or otherwise hidden wiring on the opposite side under the front nose, you say?

This thread is really the first I've heard where a post-06 doesn't have a socket. If indeed the scoot isn't a FrankenBodge with some pre-07 parts, then somehow it snuck in from PGO without a socket.

Here is a pic. I replaced the screw because the stock one was stripped. I remember taking off the front plastic and looking for wiring for the charger and I did not see any.

Not to further the zebra/unicorn hunt, but there's a chance the wiring harness for the charger was removed, too.
I took mine off because I use the knockout hole to route the wires for my heated grip controller. The wiring harness for the charging socket just connects with a molded plastic connector.

Did a little investigating and it seems that some overseas models of the PGO scooters don't come with charger ports. Is there a possibility that this was a direct import? Or one of the Taiwan models (intended for Taiwan) got into a US consignment? Just throwing some ideas against the the wall to see what sticks.

Well, here's the 2013 catalog that clearly calls out that the 125s come with 12-volt outlet. If you can find a copy of the 2012 catalog, which likely mentions the same, you could take it to your dealer and maybe get them to add one for you.

The Genuine website does not mention anything about the 12-volt outlet that I can see....other than in the catalog.

It's in the 2012 catalog--I'd think armed with that, you should be set to have your dealer install 12-volt outlet for you!

Allegedly, yes.

I would like to pose a question to the Buddy owning members of the MB community: How many others own a 2007+ model Buddy 50/125/150/170i that does not have a 12V charger?

This is the first example I know of - pending confirmation of SonnyD's sighting of new model year Buddy 170i's not having one either.

Maybe the original owner messed up the inner cover and replace it...with an older one that didn't have a cutout, like my 06....and just removed the socket so it would rattle around and or short out??? Just a thought....and since you said the stock screw was stripped...maybe coincidence maybe not..
