Taking Oil Out

Post by BigDaddy SnakeOiler »

I put a little too much oil in the Stella so it reads over the line. Any hints for taking a bit out without draining and refilling?

Catheter syringe or maybe a turkey baster?

I use the former for priming autolube pumps on 2T machines, but it could work in a pinch. You could also ask for a cc syringe from Walgreen's, I've been given one before when I asked for one.
At what point does a hobby become an addiction? I'm uncertain, but after the twelfth scooter, it sorta feels like the latter...

Seriously...I've lost count...

Seven mopeds ...that's still manageable...

Tried a turkey baster to no effect. The syringe is a good Idea. A glue syringe would probably do the trick.

If you have trouble getting a turkey baster or large syringe in to the level of the oil, try attaching a short piece of flexible vinyl tubing.

^^^^ That, I use a 50cc medical syringe with a small piece of tube when I make that oops.
Speed is only a matter of money...How fast do you want to go?

A heavy lean to the right with the cap off should work. That or just pick up the front end high enough.

Yep.. lean the scooter over and loosen your drain plug and hang with it. Pull if a bit, let the oil run over your hand and screw it back in there quickly. Stay on the hole with the plug. You should be fine.
Good luck

Thanks for all the great ideas. I've always been curious, what are the consequences of running too much oil?

In order to generate power on the power stroke the piston needs to be able to move in a downward motion following combustion in the cylinder head. A extremely high oil level (think full crankcase) would essentially hydro lock, meaning since oil like water is an incompressible fluid the crank just wont turn, that is until you blow all the extra oil into the stock airbox through the crankcase breather. If I recall, you and I both have a chopped air box mod with external breather, this breather would blow out oil until the piston and crank had enough room to move but the engine would still feel robbed for power since the sloshing of the extra fluid would absorb some of the energy leftover from the power stroke. I would expect that under normal circumstances a slightly high oil level would just cause a little extra dribble out the breather tube and would have no noticeable loss in power. In order to truly hydro lock the crankcase you have to try incredibly hard to do something that stupid. The location of the dipstick is really a failsafe on most small engines by design. Once oil starts flowing out of the fill hole you have to try really hard to overfill it. In short, I think if you open your fill plug and let the oil drain out on a level surface, you can lean the bike slightly to get out excess, but you should still be ok. You might have to clean out the breather more often but should be fine.
