Vintage 80's style Stella badge

Post by scooterdork »

I saw that quite a while back, some users on stellaspeed (I believe) had a Stella badge made to look like the 80's era Vespa badge. That seemed to be a limited run and I haven't found any.

I've contacted a car emblem maker who can make them. Would anyone be interested in 1 (or 3) if these get made? Obviously the costs decrease a bit based on volume, as the setup costs can be spread out.

It would look something like this:

There was a similar thread on this 6 years ago:

That's fun! Would these be injection molded, or 3d printed? Chromed, or painted?

These are not injection molded in such a small quantity. The company doesnt say exactly what the process is, but maybe 3D. Here is info on it as well as a gallery:

https://emblemart.com/newsite/chrome-emblems/

I have a quote for two sizes and they have artwork for the badge (see below). Size could be:

6" x 1.4"
or
4" x .94"

The cost for a small run of 15-20 would be around $20-25 per badge. I havent jumped in because I dont know if thats too high.

Thoughts? Thanks!

I would still buy three at $25 each.

I'm not sure what the best size is. My Stella's in the shop at the moment, but I'll take a ruler to it as soon as I can.

According to this site, this style of Vespa legshield badge is 120mm x 18mm, or 4.72" x 0.71", which suggests that the smaller size is probably better, at least for the legshield. I don't know whether the same size or a different size would look best on the cowls.

Thank you for managing all this, scooterdork!

I thought the smaller would be best for the leg shield as well, based on measuring mine. Cowls could be larger I suppose, but that would muck with cost.

Thanks!

There's a beautiful Stella for sale in the Baltimore area with a badge like this.

stella badges from stellaspeed

Post by mlstephens »

I still have 4 of these, found them in a drawer in my home office, would sell if anyone is interested.
Never installed (I bought a couple sets way back when on stellaspeed and only used a couple of them). 3 match, one has a slightly different tint. Since they are old stock, I would replace the sticky tape with new in order to install.

EDIT: Sold

I bought the above badges from mlstephens (thanks, Mike!), so I'll have to retract my interest in paying for new ones. But I can offer a some sizing information based on these.

They are 12.5 cm wide and 2.25 cm tall at the Ls.

I don't have a designer's eye, but it looks to me like the letters on these are a bit wider than the letters in scooterdork's template above.

I haven't installed them, but they are flat, whereas the legshield and cowls are rounded, so they might require a little force to get them mounted flush. If it's possible to make yours with some flexibility, that would probably help!

Glad I could help! That set from Stellaspeed are made from plastic, so they are flexible enough that with strong 2-way tape they will conform just fine. The tape that came with them is pretty weak, I'd pick up some 3M tape from an auto parts store, and they should be fine.

I want some too. Maybe we can get another set run? How many do we need to run for a batch? I'm happy to do the work and send them out to everyone who wants them.
