Scooter Shopping for a Friend

Post by Point37 »

i have a friend that wants to pick up his first 50cc scooter...he wants to go used and would like to stay under $1500 (preferably under $1000) and is looking in the southcoast MA area...we used to ride mopeds together back when we only had our drivers permits...we rode those things everywhere...anyway he is about my build maybe a little lighter (i'm 6', 175#)...he is more of a rider that doesn't want to wrench much so reliability is high on the list...he is undecided on 2 stroke vs 4 stroke...as far as models go he wants to register as a moped which restricts him to only certain models based on the model list the rmv has (link below) which tells you if the model is a considered a moped, a limited use vehicle or a motorcycle (see definitions pasted below)...if it's not on the list you're taking a chance that the rmv employee feels like calling it a limited use vehicle and not a moped...basically he wants to maximize reliability and speed while still remaining on the moped model list and try to be under $1000 with as new of a model as possible (2 stroke or 4 stroke)...if uncorking a model is easy and inexpensive to do that is an option as well...some of the model names on the list are pretty vague so that's an issue as well...i'm telling him to look at the following models:

yamaha: vino, c3 (not on list, think it goes faster than 30mph), zuma (<=2011 is 2t, >=2012 is 4t)
honda: metropolitan II (ch50p)
genuine: buddy 50, roughouse
piaggio ?
vespa ?
aprilia ?
suzuki ?
sym ?
lance ?
kymco people 50

if anyone has any suggestions i will add/edit them into this shopping list...i also plan to post anything i find on craigslist or on facebook marketplace in this thread as well...most of the other models on the list by the manufacturers with question marks next to their name i'm not too familiar with the moped models on the rmv model list...i feel like a zuma would be the best choice as there is a ton of aftermarket parts for them and the engines are solid but finding one in his price range that's not to modified may be tough

thanks in advance

definitions

moped
A moped must have an automatic transmission, an
engine capacity that doesn’t exceed 50 cc and can
not go faster than 30 miles an hour. A moped needs
a registration sticker from the Registry of Motor
Vehicles to operate on the roads, and can be parked
on a sidewalk.

limited use
The new law that takes effect July 31 includes
an additional category of two- to three-wheeled
vehicles, called “limited use vehicles. These vehicles
can go faster than 30 mph and reach a top speed
of 40 miles an hour. Unlike mopeds, these vehicles
need to meet federal safety certification, be titled,
inspected, insured and registered with the RMV
which now has a distinctive plate for limited use
vehicles. An operator of a limited use vehicle must
have a driver’s license unless it is federally certified as
a motorcycle, then a motorcycle license or permit is
required.

motorcycle
A two- or three-wheeled cycle that goes faster than
40 miles an hour can be registered as a motorcycle.
An operator needs a motorcycle license to operate,
and the motorcycle must meet federal safety
certification for a motorcycle, be titled, insured,
inspected and registered with a motorcycle plate.

The Registry of Motor Vehicles announced in July
that moped operators whose vehicles now meet
limited-use requirements will be required to insure,
title, register and inspect their vehicles when their
current moped registration expires.

Though this is a Buddy board, and the buddy 50 or roughhouse 50 would probably be excellent, I'll also say that the old Kymco People 50 was an excellent bike.

Thanks...added...so far this is what I have...Zumas are big money here...

I kind of want this c3 for a project bike.l but I think the top speed is 40 so I think the rmv would register it as a limited use vehicle...

I have a 98 Zuma I'd consider selling, but youre to far away. I might be going to NJ at the end of the month for a Kings X concert, but I still think your to far? Black 98. Bone stock. VERY NICE condition. New Reggae tires. New battery. Overhauled everything when I bought it. No surprises. Reliable, starts with no issues, everything works as it should. Have clear VA title. Dont ride it much because I have a Pedego bicycle. Asking $550 with stock seat/$650 with stock seat and really comfy Corbin seat.

I vote for the Roughhouse in the one Craigslist ad. $1000 for a Roughhouse with less than 500 miles seems like a great deal to me. Solid scoot that can be de-restricted to go faster than 40 MPH, is a 2T so it should have good acceleration, and is listed as a moped on the vehicle list you provided.

Additionally, the ergonomics on the Roughhouse are set up well for taller riders since the flat seat allows you to sit as far back as you want to and the foot rests (and "cutouts" in the leg shield) allow you to stretch your legs out further than many scoots like the Buddy.

yea NJ is still a little far...but thanks for the offer...the prebugs sell really well up here due to the rmv list...everyone wants a fast scooter that is considered a moped by the rmv

thanks...good to know about the ergos...i've never de-restricted a scooter...how involved is it?...being on the rmv list as a moped is going to be key so there area no questions...and i feel like yamaha and genuine have the best choices...i really wish the c3 was on the moped list cause then i would probably pull the trigger on that project bike...i emailed the rmv yesterday but i'm sure no one will get back to me...maybe i'll have to ask around

The roughhouse is easy to derestrict. Its a washer on the variator and a restricted exhaust gasket. Buy the regular sized gasket and pull off the washer and it will cruise at 40-43mph all day long.

I would go with that Rough House as well for that price and miles. My Zuma is a fair deal BUT logistics are a huge part of a deal. Plus, I have a cat thats currently on meds so the wife and I are missing our show in Jersey. Go with the RH50 at $1000. Bring cash and try for a bit lower price. Good luck!

Yeah, another suggestion. If you want a bit more low end power replace the roller weights with Dr Pulley's and it will accelerate faster from 0.

I would avoid almost every manufacturer on that list but the obvious ones: Genuine, Honda, Piaggio, SYM, Suzuki, and Yamaha. Good hunting!

Getting parts for the Genuine Bikes is very easy. There are many websites with OEM parts for everything you will need. If your not sure what the part is called they have diagrams so you can match what you see to what you need.

There are only 2 scooters on the list that aren't from one of the above (Lance is made by Sym, and Derbi is made by Piaggio - that leaves you with only the Malaguti and Adly as outliers).

yea online parts fiche websites with exploded diagrams are clutch for oem parts, to see how everything goes together and to get part numbers to see if you can find it elsewhere cheaper

i believe he was talking about the list of manufacturers from the rmv...not my list of CL scooters

yamaha, honda and genuine are my big 3...parts availability, dealer network, reliability and value...suzuki would be in there too but they don't really put out anything that he would be interested in...the rest are either more expensive or a little more rare...if i was looking for a used part from somewhere local i'd much rather have a zuma than a malaguti
