Buddy #3

Post by buzzvert »

Pulled the trigger on a local purchase... paid Real Money(tm) for this one but for a 2009 with 1600 miles and a TITLE, it's in pretty good shape. Had been sitting for a while but fired right up after a carb clean, fuel system flush and new (old but functional) battery. I'm kinda sad because it doesn't need anything so I can't really tinker too much with it.

That said- PAINT FADE! That's not gonna buff out, is it?

For anyone that's interested in a parts bike or a decently priced ride in the Denver area, I'm getting off my older 125 here: http://www.modernbuddy.com/forum/topic32091.html

You're not going to swap over the Forsa shock to the orange one?

I would also swap the NCY stator to the orange one if I was you.

I'll likely just get another Forsa shock for the newer bike- it's looking more and more like nobody wants the red one right now so it may stay around as a testbed / loaner.

With regard to the stator- I may look into an 8-pole stator vs. 6... the NCY stator is pretty inexpensive so it's always an option. Of note- the 2009+ bikes have that different stator/flywheel venting than the 2007... which may be a clue that the previous design was killing stators. Just a hypothesis though.

I think I may do the same on my Buddy, change the stator. The engine has been acting strange where it'll either lose power then die or it'll just die without any warning. It'll generally start right back up though and run like nothing happened. Doesn't happen very often but it's still annoying. Thinking it could be a stator issue. I may go for an 11-pole stator, since I have one laying around with a matching voltage regulator. I believe 170i engines have an 11-pole stator from the factory because of the FI requirements. I'd like to see a schematic wiring diagram of the 170i bikes but can't seem to find one.

That was the odd thing on the teardown of the failed stator on the 07 Buddy- I could not find an obvious failure point. What I do know is that if I sprayed the sensor with water, it would run fine until it dried out- that tells me that the hall sensor was likely failing in a way I couldn't see.

Regardless- as the NCY stator is still a 6-pole (albeit a better built one) let me know when you pull the trigger on a regulator/stator combo so we can compare notes. Chances are it'll probably work just fine but disrupt the electrical system for the LEDs and blow them all to bejeezus. :-D

You can download the 170i manual from here:

Wiring diagram is on page 11. Might want to see if the mods can put a copy in the tech section,

Thanks for the link. I've been looking for a 170i service manual just so I can get an idea of what PGO did to the engine to increase the displacement and get an idea of how the FI system is setup.
