Re: breaking scooter in by idling
Breaking in voodoo is sacred to those that hold it sacred. It is different from 2 strokes to 4 strokes but people repeat what they've heard as if they are the same. Lots of misinformation out there. For most modern scooters you can ride them how ever you'd like right out of the crate with little to no ill effect. But there are the rare cases of someone beating on their scoot straight from the shop and have it fail soon after.bjj4287 wrote:would it be ok to break it in by idling it.. plus riding it .. but mainly idling it
For several rebuilt moderately tuned 2 stroke scooters I've broken in I've done the idle method. I get it up to temp idling a bit high for about 15 minutes. Then I shut it off for about 20 minutes or so (until I can touch the exhaust where it comes off the cylinder. Then repeat 3 times. Never had a problem with that method. Afterwards I'd take it easy (staying away from sustained full throttle) for about 1 tank of gas then ran however I liked. I've never broken in a new 4 stroke.

bjj4287 - this not a slam... it's just fun to see people walking in with similar questions
Welcome to the scoot club & have fun
FYI - I tried real hard to follow the break in rules... but have failed - I do try to vary my throttle position... I dont really know if it helps or not, but I assume it cant be bad.
Good luck

What forces seal them? Specifically, what forces under load versus at idle? Is engine temperature irrelevent? If an engine reaches temp X under load and at idle, what is the difference? What about torque about the crank shaft and linear forces on the connecting rod translate to the rings differently under load?jfrost2 wrote:Idling just waste gasoline, it doesnt help those piston rings seal.

In town at red light - idle.
Green light - full throttle.
Next red light - idle.
Green light - full throttle.
Next red light - idle.
Before you know it, you're using WOT all the time with no problem.
See, that was easy.
The most critical aspect is type of oil used in first 2000 miles.
I plan to use only dino 20W50 and change oil and filter every 500 miles. A quart of oil is still cheap and I'm researching filters to find one at a parts house.
I'll let you know how it turns out.
