Speedo error (finally checked mine)

Post by ScootLemont »

ok... I finally got around to checking my speedo & found what a lot of other people have - its 10% high.
20mph is really 18
30mph is really 27
45mph is really 41

I confirmed the same with a GPS as well. The faster you go, the less acurate the speedo is. Are we sure that GPS's are 100% accurate??

My old Garmin unit specs quote 0.1mph accuracy for MPH
My Tom Tom specs do not specify but durning my transition, I ran them both for a 500 mile trip (in my car) & the numbers were identical

so... I think they are pretty accurate

well I just did mine today - didn't do the incremental since it was in the pocket on my ride to work - saw 58 on the speedo and max speed was 52.5 on the GPS, which is a little disappointing. I've seen 60 on the speedo for about 1/2 a second one time.

Mine only has 520 miles or so on it so maybe as the break in continues it will improve.

Copy that, holding the wot with the full on head tuck going on as well. :P

It's all about the aerodynamics.

It crazy how much you can gain at wot and drafting.

I managed 55.5 on the ride home yesterday down a big hill but the speedo never hit 60  The other speed was on a flat though

Speedo seems to be off the typical (for scooters) 10%. It's a pretty easy calculation when you're riding, in case you're being tailed by the fuzz.

On the accuracy of GPS, it is extremely accurate if you take into account the short delay between transmitting and receiving the data. But if you maintained a speed for a few seconds it would be more accurate than any RPM based speedometer.

Isnt that how it gets the speed?- by measuring the difference in delays transmitting from differnt satelites?
but yeah... mine does take a second to update a change in speed - i was cruising steady when I took my readings.
