Your dealer, or probably any motorsports dealer. I would highly recommend you try on gear in person, even if you plan to look for the item at a better price online.

You'll want to look for the same gear that you'd wear on a motorcycle (Helmet, armored jacket and gloves (pants are good, too), and boots that protect your ankles)... 30(+/-) mph is 30(+/-) mph when you hit the pavement or broadside a left-turning cage, no matter how big your ride is.

I recently bought an HJC CL-SP helmet ($150) and a Tourmaster Jett 2 jacket ($100), both of which were on the low end as far as price but are very good quality from what I can tell.

If you're only going to be riding in the summer, you may want to get a mesh jacket instead of the Jett. I liked it because it'll be warmer in the early spring/late fall, and it's waterproof in case I get caught out in the rain.

Anyway, in general HJC makes decent low-cost helmets, and Tourmaster the same with jackets, so they might be worth trying out for you.
