Anoooooother Oil Question :o - Clarification on Motul 5w-40

Post by runtotorun121 »

Motul brand oil has three(?) different 5w-40 synthetic oils. One is 300v Power, one is 300V 4T FactoryLine, and one is Scooter 4T 5w-40. And to complicate matters there is a bottle labeled (I saw the bottle in the image) "Motul Scooter 'Power' 5w-40 for sale on a MC website, but the Motul website doesn't show this product, or at least the label on the oil bottle does not say "Power".

So what do you know, and which one is the best to use for the Buddy?

I'm gonna buy the Rotella T 5w-40. If it's good enough for God, it's good enough for me.

Wait a minute. . .

illnoise, aren't you a moderator? You are one of the ones who 'should know' the answer (substitute 'scooter truth', 'the scooter light', or what-have-you), and all I get from you is scent wit???

I dunno, I'm not an oil snob, if it says the right numbers on the bottle, I use it. I've used those little premeasured lawnmower 2T cups in my vintage Vespas and can't tell the difference (they break down just like they do with the expensive stuff). It'd probably run fine on vodka and bacon fat, but gas and oil is cheaper.

So, just to clarify... the 5w 40 is the "proper" (for lack of a better word off the top of my head) weight of synthetic to use? I know dino oil wants 15w 40, but I also know that synthetic can withstand varying degrees of weather much better than dino.

I'm glad rundorothyrun asked about this because I'll be switching to synthetic on my next oil change.

I was not happy with my use of 5W-40 synthetic. 10w-40 or 15w-40 synthetic is much better.
Oil use is like religion to some people. But I chase my whiskey shots with 5w.

Hmm, that's some good drink for thought... I'll keep that in mind if I'll be switching from whiskey to beer; maybe the lubricant (this is a word I'll probably regret using) will ease the transition for the next morning's hangover! :)

Here's Phil's recommendation where he suggests using 5W instead of 15W, with a link to a really detailed explanation of oil weights.

topic1375.html#16184

The basic gist is 5W30 and 15w30 are the same weight (30) when the engine's warmed up (which is most of the time). The first number is the weight when it's cold, and Phil (and others) suggest that it's better to have less viscosity on startup (especially in colder climates) to get the oil spread around quickly.

10W30 would be splitting the difference, and it's the easiest weight to find, if you're indecisive *and* lazy. : )

That would be me! (well at least when it comes to oil, but I take pride in the time that I spend on determining which Kickstand filter to buy... those kickstands can get dirty if you're not careful!) :)
