Scooter(s): '07 Buddy 125
Mods: Halogen head lamp, scratches from previous owner, rear rack
Goals for your scooter(s): Cowl protectors, front rack, racing strips, I'm sure lots of other stuff, still trying to envision everything
What draws you to scooters: I briefly had a Yamaha riva from the 80s when I was 16. I picked it up at a garage sale for $100. I rode it around for a few months until my 13yo brother decided to take it for a spin and do jumps with it off curbs. Cops came and impounded the thing and wanted $400 to get it out so I had to let it go. I've wanted a scooter ever since. I have been using road bikes for the past few years to get around and have never really been able to save up for another scooter. A friend wanted a new car and I talked her out of it and convinced her to get a scooter instead, she went for the buddy 125. She fell in love with riding but wanted more power so bought a 250 ninja and sold the scoot to me cheap. I'm loving the buddy but kinda want to get a honda c70 as well.
What do you dislike about scooters: I dislike the genuine top-case I bought, seriously just fell apart, wtf
Explain your screen-name: My DJ name at the radio station
Where do you work: Special Ed. Also some pizza making to make ends meet, oh and the DJ thing, I also host a Science News show from time to time.
Other interests: Hmmm, I make beer, a lot of beer. Also I dabble in photography (making a darkroom eventually). I like reading and talking about science, and would like to get back into silk screening.
Favorite Restaurant: That's hard, there are a lot of great places in the bay area, if this was 7 years ago I would have said House of Nan King in SF but things have changed and I haven't decided on a new fav.
Something we may not all know about you: I'm going to Burning Man this year :D lemme know if any of you are going.
Additional Comments: I can't bring the scoot to burning man
Looking for ppl to ride with in LA.

Mods: debadged

Goals for your Scooter(s): I want to go with some kind of theme but I don't know what yet.

What draws you to Scooters: I just like that they are simple unpretentious transportation.

What do you dislike about scooters: The vulnerability.

Explain your screen-name: My name is Andrew. Most people call me Andy, but some people call me Drew.

Where do you work: IT Manager and consultant for a CPA firm.

Other interests: I've become a bit of a stock market junkie.

Favorite Restaurant: The Perk (a local place)

Something we may not all know about you: I'm a 45 year old married father of 2 daughters and one son.

Picture: coming eventually...

Yay for PA ;)

Name: Steve

Location: West Bountiful, UT (about 7 miles North of Salt Lake City)

Scooter(s): 08 Buddy International Italia

Mods: rear rack

Goals for your Scooter(s): I'd love to personalize the buddy somehow, but haven't yet decided on what to do to it. I'd also love to go on a scooter rally sometime.

What draws you to Scooters: When I was a kid my dad bought a used Honda Spree. It was a lot of fun to drive around on, although it didn't go past 25 mph. With gas prices on the rise, a few months ago I started researching scooters so that I could pick one up to save on some of the trips I'd normally make driving my Toyota Tacoma.

What do you dislike about scooters: I wish the buddy had slightly bigger wheels, perhaps a 12" wheel rather than a 10" and was 175 ccs (do they make that?) Alas, I need to drop a few lbs  and until I do, it'd be nice if the buddy went a little faster when needed, although I have got it up to about 60 mph.

Explain your screen-name: One of my favorite cartoons as a kid was an adaption of the book, Watership Down. Fiver was one of the rabbits from that movie.

Where do you work: Trading manager at Fidelity Investments.

Other interests: I love music. Almost all of my trips are based around concerts. Recent trips/concerts include going to Pittsburgh to see Donnie Iris and The Cruisers, and going to Santa Barbara twice, once to see Crowded House and the other time to see Duran Duran.

Favorite Restaurant: hmmmm....a little Scottish restaraunt called MacDonalds.

Something we may not all know about you: Recently married. Proposed to my wife on top of the Empire State building. Tried the bachelor gig for a long time, but married life is better.

Picture: My wife and I on a recent trip to Custar State Park in SD.

Name: Brian

Location: Harrisburg, PA (state capital - ~90 miles west of Philly, ~80 miles north of Baltimore)

Scooter(s): 08 Buddy 125, Orange

Mods: 55w Silverstar headlight, rear rack

Goals for your Scooter(s): deadlights to running lights + signals (already bought all the parts... just need time); windshield; some sort of rear carrier. In a perfect world, the Prima pipe (but that'll never happen $)

What draws you to Scooters: long story. Short(er) version is that I like the off-beatness. Several friends and coworkers have motorcycles. I don't know anyone else with a scooter. While shopping for a minivan, I sent a (joking) e-mail to my wife re: what else we could buy for that kind of cash, including a scooter in the list. When she didn't take it as a joke, a seed was planted. :-)

What do you dislike about scooters: not a whole lot. I'm a short guy, so I'll say the seat height on a lot of models (31"+ on all Kymcos/SYM, etc.). The Buddy's an exception and fits great. I would like to see a larger-wheeled Buddy at some point. (the 4" sawcuts they add without warning around here can be a real killer!)

Explain your screen name: my name is Brian, so b and then... freed. (shrug)

Where do you work: I'm a land development engineer (when I say Civil Engineer people imagine bridges and skyscrapers - I do Zoning approvals, stormwater, parking lots - less glamorous stuff)

Other interests: backpacking and travel. In a former life I enjoyed soccer, frisbee, and racquetball (waaaay out of shape now). All available time these days goes to the family...

Favorite Restaurant: a place called Dockside Willie's. Deck overlooks the river; great wings, great ribs. 3/4 mile (width of the river) from my office.

Something we may not all know about you: my wife and I have identical twin boys, who arrived home last month.

Picture: Me on my Buddy. Have switched boots and helmet since then; need to get an updated shot, I guess.

My Turn...

Post by bushbaby »

Name: Stephen

Location: Kansas City, MO (westside/bestside)

Scooter(s): 2007 Genuine Buddy 125 - Cream

Mods: Presently in R&D

Goals for your Scooter(s): Replace my cage as often as reasonable.

What draws you to Scooters: In 1992, I decided to drive the most gas-efficient car I could find. I bought my first new car, a blue Geo Metro, and got 45 MPG most of the time. Rode that car into the ground and inherited a family mini-van, which is what I drive now when scootering doesn't make sense. I stumbled on the Buddy while looking for the new generation of gas efficiency, and being astounded that it's gotten worse instead of better. My commitment is for my next new vehicle to be more efficient than the Geo. The smile on my face when I ride my Buddy to work is partly the joy of realizing I'm getting 100 MPG and spent a seventh of what a Toyota Prius goes for. Also, scooters are cool. I love counter steering and leaning into a turn. I love feeling light and fast and free. I love waves and peace signs from other scooters and motorcycles and sometimes even pedestrians, bicyclists, and cagers. My scooter is the best thing I've ever bought myself. I love my Buddy.

What do you dislike about scooters: I have a cold tolerance of about 36 degrees, which I discovered last autumn. Ice and snow and rain and sand and pits in the road. I dislike having them stolen or crashed (both of which I have had happen.)

Explain your screen-name: Last name Bushman. Some friends call me "Bushbaby" and I like it.

Where do you work: As of July 1st, I work where I am. My 10-year contract stint-at-Sprint comes to an end. I own and manage the apartment building I live in. I draw at home. Home is now headquarters.

Other interests: I love to draw. I love to read about plant-based psychedelics and the history of knowledge. Peace. Creativity. Cooperation. Coffeehouses.

Favorite Restaurant: Sushi: Jun. Vietnamese: Sung Son. Ethiopian: Blue Nile. Chinese: Blue Koi. Indian: Korma Sutra. Thai: Thai Place. Vegetarian: Eden Alley. Kansas City is awesome.

Something we may not all know about you: In 1992 I opened the first coffeehouse/espresso bar in Kansas City: JAVAGAIA! It was open a whole year-and-a-half before being destroyed by flood (9 feet!) without flood insurance. My apartment building is on a hill.

Additional Comments: All my wisdom teeth have been removed. The wisdom now flows freely.

Nice work!
Nah, that's all in-camera--the only post processing would be a slight color adjustment. It was shot with a 24mm f/2.8, which has a very thin depth of field when it's wide open...

Honestly, though, that shot was taken by my wife. The angle and framing was all her; I just set up the flash and made sure the exposure was where I wanted it.

And some of the food shots have links to recipes on Epicurious, but not as many as there should be, I guess.

Name: Ted

Location: San Marcos, TX - the gateway to the Hill Country

Scooter(s): Red Buddy 125 (Seafoam 125 for my wife)

Mods: Rear rack, Silverstar headlight and signals, deadlight turnsignal (connectors on order), blue and white flames, blue Rhino Lining on interior panels (soon), chrome trim, "92 MPG" vanity plate ("93 MPG" for wife's) (on order), seat beads, blue mohawk.

Goals for your Scooter(s): First San Marcos, then the world.

What draws you to Scooters: Fun

What do you dislike about scooters: Nothing

Explain your screen-name: Over the last 13 years or so, I have been active on more than 30 message boards, like this. Boards for motorcycles, boards for photography, boards for landscaping, boards for humor, geographic boards, and on and on and on. I'm always a n00b somewhere. So, starting here, I no longer try to hide it.

Where do you work: I'm the VP of a business unit at a software development company. Every time I write it, I think "that doesn't feel right." I'm a disgruntled worker-bee at heart and always try to look out for the little guys.

Other interests: Motorcycles, racing, photography, camping, canoeing, message boards, and of course, my wife, who supports and even encourages just about anything I ever want to try.

I was one of the top fundraisers for the local MS150 for the last two years and hope to do even better this year and I am working on a plan to get up to $4.5 million in college scholarships into the hands of local students.

Favorite Restaurant: The Root Cellar, Mana's, Lolita's, Cafe Central Smoothie, Juan Henry's, Gordo's (on North LBJ, like that means anything to anyone).

Something we may not all know about you: I've lost my license twice for driving over 100 mph. Once, they set up a roadblock for me in Rhode Island for doing 125 in a 55 (I had slowed down). The fastest I've gone on two wheels is 140 and 145 on four wheels. I've been pulled over for speeding nine times in the last year and gotten seven tickets.

Sometimes, when I sense that some code being delivered to QA had no unit testing and is about to blow up, I like to yell "Leeroy Jenkins!" as it gets "thrown over the wall."

Additional Comments: My wife is trying to get me to race stock cars at the local short track, but I just don't have time.

Scoot Clubs: I'm the founder of the fledgling club 78666 Scoots.

Scooter(s): Buddy 150 International St Tropez

Mods: Front and rear chrome racks, Matching rear top case, cowl protectors, H4 Silverstar headlight replacement

Goals for your Scooter(s):Save enough on gas that it recoups the cost of buying my Buddy, have fun riding every day throughout the year, finish my extensive list of mods, keep my scoot in tip top shape with regular maintenance

What draws you to Scooters: Great way to be introduced to two wheeled transportation, great fuel economy, didn't know this at the time bu a truely awesome community!

What do you dislike about scooters: People calling them mopeds, other "true" cycle owners (especially sport bike owners) looking down their noses at you like they are better than you

Explain your screen-name: Long story here but here goes: My oldest daughter was 2 and my wife was really pregnant with our second daughter. Stephanie(oldest daughter) loved listening to the Sesame Street alphabet songs especially the song about the letter S. The song is ung by a snake named Sammy and during it he introduces his sister Slinky. Stephanie began calling her unborn sister Slinky. During this time my internet service provider changed and I needed to come up with a new name as my original one was already taken by someone else :x  so I thought new name newslinky!! It has stuck ever since.

Where do you work:I am a Network manager for a major telephone service provider

Scooter(s): 2006 Black Buddy 125. I also have a '78 Honda Hobbit, which is not a scooter (it's a moped, an actual moped with pedals, not just something with a 50cc engine that people call a moped because they don't know any better) but it was my beginner bike.
Mods: No way. That is, if someone wants to mod it for me and knows what they're doing, great. If not, I'm not up for that. I would dig a speaker hookup though.
Goals for your Scooter(s): More chrome, get some doggles for the dog, cross the 520 bridge with my girlfriend on the back
What draws you to Scooters: They're f-ing cool, they're beautiful, they're fast, I like feeling close to the road. Riding through the city on a scooter makes me feel like I'm closer to everything going on around me. I've wanted a scooter since before I could drive, I'm glad to finally have one.
What do you dislike about scooters: Figuring out where I'm going to park it when I go on vacation for a few days? There's only street parking in my neighborhood. I don't know anyone with a garage. Hm.
Explain your screen-name: Shortened version of my name!
Where do you work: Girlie Press, an offset printing company in Seattle. I work in the pre-press department.
Other interests: Letterpress, screenprinting, printing in general, some design, being outside, going to shows, ukulele.
Favorite Restaurant: There are too many. I love food.
Picture: me and the dog (dog in my bag strapped to my front), waiting for the girlfriend to come out of the grocery store (posing for the camera of course).

Scooter(s): Tangerine Buddy 125 "Bellaviva"

Mods: rear rack, daisy decals tastefully on scooter and helter skelter on helmet. Tried an SX saddlebag, but it got saggy and I was fearful my rear lights were being partly hidden. Replaced it with great retro wire basket from local grocery store

Goals for your Scooter(s): Get skilled enough to ride in the 9 months of relentless rain we have here

What draws you to Scooters: Europe, gas savings, fun, mid life crisis: figuring out the second half and finding new reasons to live

What do you dislike about scooters: Nothing yet

Explain your screen-name: well, scooter is self explanatory I would think, the mama part is my role as a late life mom raising a teen. Really, I should be a grandmother by now. I am trying to talk my son into becoming a teenage father so I don't miss out by dying too soon. But, he would just like to start high school. How ungratifying is that?

Where do you work: for myself, private practice as a marriage and family therapist. Specialty: couples. 'Nuf said?

Other interests: Writing. I write a blog about raising my kid, personal essays. Photography. Learning to speak Spanish. Travel. I also really love my work, it's kind of a hobby.

Favorite Restaurant: Don't have one. At our house, we are trying not to repeat restaurants this year, so we can try new ones all the time. We get into a restaurant rut.

Something we may not all know about you: Born and raised in Toronto. Jewish. Lived in CA for 20 years.

Additional Comments:
Picture: Still figuring out how to do this and it's kinda late right now.

What draws you to Scooters: Always wanted to ride on 2 wheels, and from the first time I saw a Vespa, I fell in love with the thought of riding w/o having to work any gears! I also like that they get good gas milage, and are smaller and take up less room on the road.
What do you dislike about scooters: Errrrr....wish they were even "greener" with emissions, I guess....
Explain your screen-name: I live off coffee, am part cat.
Where do you work: at a cat Hotel, of course!
Other interests: Reading philosophy books and anything by Noam Chomsky, sci-fi books, tv shows and movies, anything L&O, and the original CSI, messing around with stuff I don't really know how to do such as gardening, home improvements, sewing, anything really! Oh, and finding good music.
Favorite Restaurant: A local chinese buffet that has lots of seafood dishes and sushi
