The 5.7L V8 4x4 Chevy Suburban custom conversion. The best vehicle ever built. I can haul 4 scooters with my trailer. I can sleep in the back at camping rallys. I can drive through and over almost anything & I have. Plus, with the tinted windows it is a great make-out vehicle. My kids can sit in different rows so they do not touch each other. I have no idea what the gas milage is because I have been afraid to figure it out. I can tell you that changing the fuel pump is a b**ch with the 44 gallon gas tank.

02 Mercury Sable ... god I hate that car ... it tends to get around 16mpg because it has "issues". It also has a worse turning radius than one of my friends' Explorers. I've saved enough money to replace it, but am waiting until I head off to grad school next fall. No point in getting a fun new car when it would live in my apartment's parking lot that tends to average one break in a month, and has given the sable at least 3 new scratches on the bumper.
Now it only gets driven when it is A. pouring down rain, B. need to move large amounts of stuff, C. grocery runs, or D. when my gf needs to go somewhere without me (she can't get her M class license until she happens to be back in her home state of NJ at the same time as she has access to a scoot or motorcycle, or changes her residence). C will actually probably be going away once I find a decent pair of saddlebags to go with my oh so stylish milk crate top case .

The Wife drives an 07' Chevy HHR. Averages 27mpg in town. got it up to 34mpg on the highway.
I liuidated the 01' grand am last month so the scoot is my #1 ride.
I have a 1947 AM General Willys Jeep Restored to its OD green army goodness. It only gets like 7mpg but when people see me driving down the street wearing an army helmet and leather bound goggles driving that thing with the front windshield down, I get alot of smiles....

We have a 2002 Mazda Protege5. The only one in Atlanta with km/h on the speedo I am sure. Gas mileage = not as good as it should be for the size of car, but it is a fun car to drive. We sold our 87 VW cabriolet when we moved from Canada (still miss that car on nice days). Looking for a suitable convertible to replace that one for non-scooter days (my wife's commute doesn't work well on a scooter).
Eric, I though you were Jonesing for a mini. C30? How do you like it so far?
Some nice rides in this thread!!

Heh, I always wanted to add one of those to my collection. I know someone with an old Dodge Medical truck from 43 or 44. Neat old truck, but its fairly slow. Well, I was all hot for the Mini Clubman S. When I test drove it, though, I wasn't too impressed, but it seemed to suit my needs and how I drive. But once I added in all the options I would want and the "location fee" os several thousand dollars just for buying in SoCal, it was going to cost me a lot. I also drove the Cooper S, Smart Cabriolet and the Audi A3. I test drove the Volvo because I'd seen it at the LA Auto Show and it got an impressive review from the LA Times auto critic. Otherwise, I'd hardly be aware of its existence—there's no marketing for this model in the US and they only brought over 8,000 this year. The test drive totally sold me on the C30. My only regret is that in my first-time-new-car-buyer anxiety, I should have waited for another color instead of getting black because it was available on the lot. Also, I should have tried to bargain for the Garmin Nuvi 750 GPS system they were giving away in a promotion for the high end models and SUVs. Oh well! Anyway, I love the car—it's small, has good mileage, drives really well and has much more room than the wife's New Beetle to haul stuff.golfinguy wrote:Eric, I though you were Jonesing for a mini. Until getting our scooters, my wife and I had used a single car, an '03 VW Golf named Lu-Lu, um 'er Lu for short. We attempted initially to justify getting the scooters to save on fuel. Then after kicking that idea around for a couple of weeks, it dawned on us that we would both be driving scooters thus cutting the 90 mpg in half to about 45 mpg. This is what our diesel got already. At this point we began telling it like it really is......we got scooters because we wanted them.

No Hemi's in the Plymouth line...Kaos wrote:Ahh, I LOVE 58 Fury's. I had a 58 Desoto Fireflite(basically the same car) for a while. Theres nothing quite like those big finned cruisers. Whats under the hood? 58 had the option for the 392 Hemi, and some CRAZY crossram intakes.... Ok I'll stop with the car geek-out1958 Plymouth Fury
My Fury has a "poly" 318 with dual quads, 300ish hp.
Optional for the Fury in '58 was the 350 "Golden Commando" wedge head.
the '56-'58 Furys were VERY limited production and had special Fury-only engine options. The Fury poly 318 differed from the regular line 318 in that it had a 10:1 compression ratio, special fury-only shot-peened crank, cam, and the quad-carb intake. probably a few other things I'm forgetting too.
Total package gets an "economical" (as the brochure says) 8mpg.

Funny, this seems to be the exact cross-section of scooterist/car ownership as it's been as long as I can remember. There's always a vintage mini, there's always a Westy, always an el Camino, there's always a few rally cars, some pseudo-retro PTs and new beetles/minis/etc, a couple Ford Rangers, a luxury german or two, a couple embarassingly huge SUVs and the rest is rounded out with japanese sedans.
But there are usually more Honda CR-Vs for some reason! I only count two, including me.
I think this thread is proof that true scooterism has way more to do with unchecked vehicle fetishism than it does with economy.

God, I love the looks of the 1800s. Have you ever driven one? I've never even sat in one and I have always wanted one. I drove a couple ('60 and '69) Karmann Ghias for a while, then some years later I decided I wanted another. Found a '65 ragtop for a good price, drove down, looked it over, sat in it, and realized that they had gotten a LOT smaller in 20 years! Ha!ericalm wrote:...Yup—has the turbo! My current, never-to-be-realized dream car is a pre '56 or post '59 Metro. Kinda like the Ghia: just ugly enough to be cute.
Oh, '98 Accord bottom trim level and '01 GMC Sierra almost bottom trim level.

my wife's 98 v6 honda accord and my wife's 2008 subaru legacy sedan. i had a 2000 xterra we traded in for the subaru due to MPG. i was trying to be a nice hubby and sacrafice my xterra(which i loved except for the mpg)and take the old car so she could have the new one. except now she still drives the accord, which was supposed to become mine after getting the subaru. so i guess i'm stuck with the spankin' new car. it's a ruff life i guess.

I'll probably need permission from my wife to have a girlfriend. If you knit she'd probably be cool with it.

siobhan has a couple coupes, though. The ES wagon had a shorter production run (and a downgraded engine). True confession: My love for the 1800 originated with the tv show "thirtysomething." Ken Olin's character drove one. If I'd been older, it may have been Roger Moore's car on "The Saint."

03 Toyota Tundra and an 05 BMW 330i ZHP, which I flew to Oregon to get last September, drove to Texas and put another 35,000 miles (and counting) on it in the year I have had it.
6 speeding tickets later, I still love it.

None!
Sold the car in 1998.
It was a 1989 VW Jetta, charcoal gray. It was beautiful and fast.
Decided it wasn't worth all the money to "the man"
insurance, inspection, property tax, gasoline, tags, maintenance.
I guess now that I upgraded from the 49cc, I have all of those costs again, but it costs far less.

Six speeding tickets in a year in CA and you'd be facing a suspended license! (Actually, if you got six in 2 years, you'd be in trouble.)

Sadly, I only get to ride the scooter on evenings and weekends. I've got a 110 mile round-trip commute. I did it on a motorcycle for a long time, but the heat started to get to me and suiting up to battle rush hour traffic was a drag.
The first ticket was in Oregon, so I don't count that.
The second one, I took defensive driving.
The third one, I went to court to try to get it dismissed (shot in the dark) and they let me take defensive driving again.
The fourth one, I just paid the fine. I also got a letter in the mail, explaining that I have to pay a premium each year for the points on my license. I think it works out to about $150 so far.
The fifth one, I agreed to pay the fine, but have not sent it yet.
The sixth one, I am fighting. Not a shot in the dark, the ticket is BS. I expect to win.
There have been others in other vehicles. I got off with a warning a couple of times, too.
It's been a busy year or so.
My wife is extraordinarily understanding.

1999 RAV-4, 25/28 roughly. I haven't been doing much town-primary driving in a while, so the 25mpg bit is a guesstimate. I'm just happy I'm done commuting to school 6 days a week...at 70 miles round-trip.
You know you drive too much when you can estimate how much fuel you have left to within 5 miles of dry, AND can accurately recalculate for the difference between unloaded and max capacity weight....

My list of rides: 1980 VW Rabbit pick-up (runs on biodiesel), 1994 Toyota Corolla wagon (just turned over 390,000 miles Wednesday) and a 2008 Honda Fit (logged a 43 MPG tank on my last trip to the Twin Cities.) There is also lists of 2-wheelers; motorized: 1982 Honda Urban Express, 1996 Honda Elite 80, 2004 Kymco ZX 50, Buddy 125, and un-motorized: Bridgestone, Giant, and Schwinn bicycles. It seem I have a bit of a thing for things with wheels doesn't it? Hmm..
I do actually ride/drive them all on a pretty regular basis. During the warmer months I do about 95% of my in town travel by scooter. In the colder months the Kymco (tested down to -6F, knobby tires) does duty for my 2 mile ride to work unless snow or ice makes riding dangerous. The Fit was bought to replace the Corolla, but considering the number of years and miles of service The Wagon has givien me, I figure it has probably paid for itself a couple times over so I haven't been a hurry to sell it. The VW truck is fun for running errands, and since it is basically a Rabbit hatchback with a 6' bed where the rear seat would have been, the bed floor is pretty low which makes loading up a scooter pretty easy.
