Any paint tips?

Post by Tricia »

So- thinking about painting the scooter. I've painted quite a few cars and other fun stuff, and am pretty familiar with quite a bit of metalwork, (filling, gas welding, bondo-bandito, etc) but haven't ever painted anything plastic.
Any tips? Crazy things to watch out for?
Gracias. :D

I recomend light sanding of the panels and some sort of mild degreaser to remove any grime and finger prints. I actually used windex and it worked great.

When painting I used many light coats of Rust-oleum Universal paint. The parts I painted last year have held up fine.

I took my dash out of my show truck I had and smoothed all the texture out. It was done for 4 years with no flaking or any probs, would have lasted a lot longer but the guy I sold it to totaled it out.

I used Bulldog, self etching primer, filler primer, 400 grit paper, then paint (I primed more but you won't have to since it's not textured)

If you're not going to use them I'd fill the front punch out holes too.

I sanded the panels I painted with supa-fine sandpaper (like 1000 grit), then threw a few coats of Rustoleum. I got the kind made special for plastic... It took a couple days to *totally* cure, but now that junk is solid.

Dumb question

Post by OScoot! »

OK....dumb question for those of you who have done painting before. Do you paint both sides of the panel? Or just the outward visible side? Just curious. One would think both sides.....but then, is it really necessary?

Don't go out of your way to paint the backside. If you get some paint there, fine, but there's no advantage to painting what isn't visible.

When you take a panel off you'll find the back is never painted.

Yeah you don't have to paint the backside, but don't tape it off either just let the paint over spray onto the back side to reduce pealing.

Serriously, Has anybody found a nail polish color to match the darker color of a St Tropez, I like that idea for a touch up.

Don't use nail polish. Dupli-Color has a lot of touch-up "pen-brush's" surely they have one close to that color.
