Total Miles Ridden vs Driven
.
Total Miles Ridden vs Driven (for 2 adults)
13,800 Is the total miles on scooters for 2010
18,200 Is the total miles on 4 wheels for 2010
Compared to:
48,500 Is the total miles on 4 wheels for 2009
36,600 Is the total miles on 4 wheels for 2008
It would be very cool to cut our driving to under 10,000 miles in 2011 and see where that would put our scooter miles for the entire year.
Especially when in 2010 we spent roughly $3,000 on gas for the autos and less than $320 for gas in the scooters!

In 2010, I put 17,000 miles on a scooter and 2,000 miles on an auto-rickshaw, vs... ~8,000 on a minivan (rental, road trip to Utah) in January and, um...
I think I drove a car twice the rest of the year? No, wait, three times.

I can't speak for all year, as I haven't kept a really good record, but only one file-up in the car both this summer and last...and all 3 of my scooters now each have around 2,500 miles on them that I've ridden (started riding in 2009).
Past bikes: 08' Genuine Buddy 125, '07 Yamaha Majesty 400, '07 Piaggio MP3 250, '08 Piaggio MP3 500, '08 Aprilia Scarabeo 500
Current bikes: Two '09 Genuine Buddy 125's

My car: 0.
Zipcar or other people's cars: a few hundred, if that.
Megabus and Amtrak: several hundred.
Scooter: not sure about 2010, but nearly 10,000 in the past 18 months.
A big improvement from my 2007 and 2008 commutes from Baltimore, almost 55 miles each way, and close to 20,000 cage miles a year.

Pretty cool to see others who don't need or rely on a car/truck or other type of vehicle. I though we were doing good compared to my driving from years ago where I hit 40K a year without trying!
The Dallas - Fort Worth area just keeps on growing and that means more miles if you drive yet for 2010 we started riding into Dallas from McKinney and that helped to drop a lot of drive miles. Now if we can work on some of those out of town trips!

After reading this post I plan to keep a record of my scoot vs. cage mileage for 2011.
As of Jan 1st 2011:
Truck = 29018 (bought it in March 2010 with 21k)
SYM HD200 = 8795 (start of 2010 had about 3,400)
Buddy 125 = 7488 = (not sure how much mileage it had at the beginning of 2010)
Yesterday and this morning temps were in the mid-20's and dry... so yes I rode to work both days.

I don't keep an accurate count of this kind of stuff, but…
I bought (well, leased) a new Volvo C30 almost 3 years ago because of a change in my commute. Five months later, I left that job and have been working either at home or much closer to home since then. My car has just a little over 12K miles on it. I have 22K on my Vespa and 2200 or so on the Stella. There's a good chance the C30 going back to the dealer in a few months.
Why sad? Well, I love my scooters, but I love my car, too. It is small, nimble, fast, handles well and suits me perfectly—much like the scoots. The rear lights nake a smiley face at night. Kawaii!
My wife drives a new VW Golf: Not a TDI, not a GTI, just the plain, little red basic model, which is pretty much what she loves in a car. It's a decent machine, but it bores the hell out of me.
I'm appeasing myself by thinking of my next car (when I need one). The Fiat 500 tops the list, though I've yet to see or drive one. I really like the looks of the Nissan Juke, too. But I'd buy another C30 in a heartbeat!
