Buddy 170i vs Buddy 150 Shoot out!

Post by pocphil »

With equal(ish) riders at an average of 210 lbs. we ran both bikes with both riders in both directions thereby eliminating as many variables as possible.

The Verdict:

The Buddy 170i got out to an early lead and held it. By 20 mph the 170 was about 6 bike lengths ahead of the 150 and that's the way it stayed until our agreed upon shut-down point of 60 mph indicated.

No matter how we ran the test the results were the same, the only change was when we put the lighter (205 lbs) rider on the 170i. The 170i got a 7 bike head start and held it to 60.

We felt that the 170i was definitely benefiting from a better mix from the fuel injection at the start so to minimize that effect we held the brakes and pre-loaded the motor/trans by revving the motor against the brake.

The launch in the "Brake-Torque" test was better for the 150...this time the 170 only got a 4 bike lead and then things evened out.

What we found interesting was despite the obvious advantage at the launch, the Buddy 150 held it's position throughout the rest of the race. After the first 100 feet or so it was like there was a rope between the two scooters.

Very, very fun.

Interesting results. Would you say the Buddy 170i is going to hold its speed up hills better than the 150? That's what I'm curious about. I'm guessing yes.

That is very interesting. So, a 150 with a couple of mods to help with quicker take off would hold it's own against the 170.

Phil, was the 150 a new scoot (not broken in yet)?

Curious about break in performance increases on the 170. Someone buy one and put 1K on it—quick!

More importantly, I bet the 170i kicks the 150's butt in the "Put it away wet and leave it in the garage all winter and see how it starts up in the spring" test.

I've been waiting for this test. :D I'm with skoots, holding speed under stress or load would be sweet. Throttle response the same? I guess we need to have a progress report when one gets broken in.

:+!: I couldn't believe it when I wheeled my sh150i out after 4 months in the back yard and it fired up like I'd just rode it the day before. The Buddy 50 wakes up from winter storage like a ground hog in Febuary, sluggish and kinda pissed off

I've now been through 2 spring wake-ups with my Itallia 150 and it was pretty quick wake-up. Last spring it caughed a bit but started . This spring it was as if the bike was never put away. It started on th 1st try.

A FI system can be just as susceptable to fuel clogging as a carbureted system. Yeah, it's pressurized, but the gunk can build up just the same. I have a pal whose FI scoot still ain't running this year.

Still gotta add a fuel stabilizer if it sits.

That was my first thought, was the 170 broke in? I was surprised Phil didnt mention the mileage of both scoots, after all it does matter.

Certainly we want the 170 to be an improvement in all areas of performance as it shows an evolved Buddy rather than mere hype.

Thanks Phil.

Well we ran them yesterday used a new 170i and a 150 that had 700miles on it with a pipe and cdi box both riders at 145lbs and the 150 pulled in every scenario except a resting idle stop. we did multiple rolling starts and you could actually let the 170 out front roll up to it on the 150 wait then pass it when ever you wanted
