My daughter bought me one and I'm still figuring it out (Luddite that I am) but what tunes are you listening to? For scootering, I am a Beach Boys fan...But Born to be Wild must be a constant!

I think you just revealed your age! :)

I like the Beach Boys too, but hated them as a teen. In later years I came to appreciate Brian Wilson's songwriting and arranging more.

Maybe it's age, but I find myself retreating to "comfort music" and old favorites these days. (Some of that "comfort" stuff isn't actually comforting…) Also, years of working at publications and music magazines meant I never had to look far for new music and rarely had to pay for it. Now it feels like a chore!

I am on Spotify*, which may help me pick up some new tunes. Username: ericalm. A good way to see and share what your friends are listening to.

I've put out 2 playlists. One is 44 versions of the song "Summertime," some genius, some good, and some just plain awful.
The second is The Literal "Summer" Mix, 61 songs I like that all have "summer" in the title—none of which are "Summertime."

*Spotify is a new (to the US) music streaming service. You can stream any song from their 15 million tune library for free, only you get a commercial every few songs. Otherwise, you can pay for a premium service that will also work online and on mobile.

Well since we are giving away our age....I am from DC and for many years (edit, OK 2) the Beach Boys put on a 4th of July concert at the Mall. I was 14 (13?) and finally allowed to take the metro into the city with friends to attend. BUT it was not to be. Prez Reagan deemed them too dangerous, unamerican or controversial.OK I don't remember exactly what his beef was, but they were replaced by Wayne Newton. The night was not completely lost b/c I went swimming in the reflecting pool which I have to say makes for a good memory. I am sure, according to Reagan's logic, I would have been naked if the beach boys had been playing. Wayne helped me be virtuous.

I have a little over 3,000 songs on my iPod. And I almost always have it on shuffle mode so I get besieged by random songs one right after the other. So it kind of goes like this... CCR, Metallica, Chopin, Kid Rock, The Johnson Southerneers, Mambo Kings Soundtrack, Hank Williams (all 3 of them), Jose Feliciano, Janis Joplin, Sade, John Prine, Delbert McClinton, Al Green, etc...

The mix of genres is a little weird but I like it all

:)

Speaking of "Summertime" I like Brittni Paiva's version. If you not heard of her, you should search for her on YouTube. I think you will enjoy how talented she is.

It wasn't Reagan himself, but his Secretary of Interior James Watt who opposed the Beach Boys and got Wayne Newton. Danke Shoen, Jimmy!
Watt, of course, was later indicted by a grand jury for perjury and obstruction of justice.

Likewise, except that it's a Creative Zen and about 4700. What I think is best about shuffle is that I might buy an album (that's how old I am; I still call CDs albums!) that has one good cut in the midst of 14 pieces of relative dreck. But when heard randomly in between Captain Beefheart, Richard Thompson and the Spanic Boys, those 14 pieces of dreck can sound pretty good. Shuffle is the best way to make an OK tune sound good.

Lately I've been on an Americana binge. Alison Krauss, John Hiatt, Avett Brothers, etc. And I love Pandora. That one app built in to my Blu-Ray player has cost me more money in new CDs than the Blu-Ray player cost!

I hasten to clarify that these charges were not because he cancelled the Beach Boys. :) His only crime in this incident was in not being aware that "rock-and-roll music" had been removed from the Threats To Our American Way Of Life list some 25 years earlier, nor that the Beach Boys were already on the Bands So Old Your Parents Like Them list.

Well, aside from being VERY Anti-Apple (they hate their customers so much..), I am all about the music while riding. Granted the bike I've been using off an on lately is so damn loud that it's difficult to enjoy good tunes (My brother in law's Harley 883 with straight pipes :x ).

My device is of course, Windows Phone 7 with Zune Pass, which is sort of like Spotify where it streams a huge library to my phone anywhere I am, but they were doing it long before that service came to the US. And for my subscription fee I get to keep 15 tracks a month downloaded as files on my own system, be it phone, PC, XBOX or work computer. So it's like paying for a streaming service and getting a free album a month :D I also have about 7,000 tunes on my device as well.

Right now I've been on a Mumford and Sons kick just because of the stress relieving factor. Usually I'm a late 90's Punk and Ska fan (showing MY young-ish age) but it's been more mellow stuff. I'll even admit it: Coldplay is on there too

I used Pandora alot when I got one of the first Samsung Galaxy phones to hit the US (Android OS). It was great on there, but after going head first into a Microsoft ecosystem, Zune just blew me away with how easy it was. I don't even know if they have a Pandora app for WP7 I've been that much into the Zune Player :P

Seriously, you two? An Apple/PC flame war here?

Give it a rest, please.

Way too many songs in my collection / on my iPods and iPhone. My collection is all over the map.

And as for Spotify, I've tried it and so far I'm sticking with MOG. I think it's a great deal and great catalog. I have now stopped dropping $30/month on new records (2/3 that I won't end up liking) and just pay them $10 a month.

I do like how Spotify's desktop app links with your local collection but that's all I liked better.

[salesman on]If anyone is interested in MOG, use this link for a 2 week free trial and get me a free month![/salesman off]

I just think Spotify doesn't really add anything new to what's out there. It's not bad from what I have heard from other users, just not different enough. I haven't had a chance to try it (because I guess I'm not cool enough for the "invite only" enrollment), so I'll hold off on judgement. But, Zune does about the same for me and it works. If it comes along, I'll give it a shot.

The only thing that really irritates me is the fact you have to receive an "invite" to use the service. You can't just go to the site and sign up, and that frankly pisses me off in a very tiny way. Google+ gives me the same reaction. It's saying 'Oh, only the *cool* people are allowed to use this. If you don't get an invite, you don't get to use it because you don't know the right people'. That seems a bit pretentious to me, and screams of attempts of viral marketing. It's funny because everyone was excited to see Spotify over here (even when most people never had used it before), so why the invite stuff?

Then again, I find it pretentious that In-and-Out has their "secret" menu that you need to know certain code words to get. Screw that! If you don't think I'm cool enough to buy products or services from you, I'll go to Jack In The Box :P

Yeah the invite marketing plan is in full effect these days. I checked out Spotify a while ago by using a UK address and so I already had an account. The US version is limited in comparison.

I'm afraid the invite thing is probably going to be used more. When used to keep growth manageable and user experience quality high, I'm all for it, but I don't know if that's the case with Spotify and G+.

This thread was locked because people were acting crappy towards one another despite a Moderator asking that it stop.

I've removed the offending posts and am unlocking the thread because it's an otherwise worthwhile topic. But, SERIOUSLY, the personal attacks and snideness needs to stop.

People here will have different opinions than yours. Sometimes they may be strongly-held, even if they're completely baseless and wrong headed. We don't go after each other over than kind of crap here, so if you can't proceed in a civil manner, move along. Don't take the bait. Don't get sucked into a flame war over a debate older than the Internet itself.

Thanks, mods. I almost started another music related thread along the lines of the What Music are you listening to right now? thread on MV. I often don't like the music others are listening to, but once in a while, who knows, you might find out about The Avett Brothers or MB's own Zoot Alors!.

Oh, right now I'm listening to Boomer's Story.

When this came up elsewhere, a friend threw George Harrison's "Cloud 9" in my face, claiming that Lynne had "ruined" an ex-Beatle's album. I replied that Harrison knew exactly what he was getting and it's not as if Lynne wrote "When We Were Fab" and "Got My Mind Set on You." Sheesh!

Meanwhile, currently listening to:

Stereolab and Yo La Tengo, which keep coming up on my iPod because they've put out so much damn music

I love Jeff Lynne and all, and he's a great engineer, but for the love of God someone needs to introduce him to a reverb unit.

My POD, codename "Bling-Bling Jr." has nearly 4,000 tracks. A lot of 80s, classic rock, hip hop, techno/house, some country, jazz, disco, and oldies. I have a few podcasts, each episode over an hour long, called "bar grooves". It's a nice mix of chill house music. Not too over the top and definitely not annoying. Nobody mentioned Dr. Dre "the Chronic"??

I install music servers for people with automation systems so I've amassed almost 500 gigs of music over the past few years. When I'm rolling the (2) wheeled beasty the usual playlist has,

Billy Idol
Bryan Adams
Zeppelin
Elvis
The Reverend Al Green
Marvin
Boston
Sublime
with a small sprinkle of
Oshen
Matisyahu
and Bob Marley
Cardinal Willis Helmsly III
Dominus ominum, homo erectus, duckbill Platypus,
Amen....

Haven't heard of (or heard) most of the tunes mentioned on this thread. I do have to admit I love Perry's "Firework"! In my lifetime, I saw The Carpenters three times, Harry Chapin twice, but regret I never saw Melanie! She pulled out of a concert in San Carlos in 1973 with Harry Chapin, but I saw him and was bowled over. Love the Seekers, Peter, Paul and Mary, and ABBA. Okay, Eric, you've guessed my age. I was born in the Devonian Period...and Trilobites were rather tasty if steamed with melted butter. Jan and Dean, what a duo. And the Ronnettes....what a bad girl band in their day. Ronnie Specter was the bomb. Female singers weren't into dressing like pole dancers, they got by on sheer talent. Love songs were just that...about love, whether lost, or found. The Crystals, the Chiffons, the Toys, The Supremes....I love early Motown girl groups. By the way, Google Karen Carpenter playing the drums. One of the best drummers of all time. And my favorite song of all times was "One Tin Soldier" from Billy Jack. Many have covered it, but Jinx Dawson got it right the first time. And it you feel like crying, watch two videos by Martina McBride...."Concrete Angel" and "Independence Day". I am a sucker for sad songs. "Daisy a Day" by Jud Strunk, "The Greatest Man I Never Knew" and "Every Other Weekend" by Reba. Pass me a Kleenix, please.

I'm actually a big fan of early Motown and early '60s soul and r&b in general. In high school I had a '68 Mercury Cougar with only an AM radio and the only good station was all soul, blues and funk, probably nothing newer than 1973 or so. It wasn't just the big pop hits, they'd pull out some deep cuts, stuff the FM oldies stations never played. It was a good education and probably helped form my early tastes.

Of course, at the same time I was listening to every ridiculous '80s new wave band on the planet… some really embarrassing stuff.

I've seen 4 of those bands! :) Sadly, Talking Heads is one of my all time fave bands, no qualifiers, yet they're one of the ones I never got to see. (Seen all the members separately, but so not the same.)

I approve of ALL of these for any rider.... EXCEPT Erasure. My sister used to play their albums CONSTANTLY. That and reruns of "Queer As Folk". I swear that was all on her computer... I'm sure I would've liked them if I didn't have to hear it over, and over, and over, and over......
"Earth" without Art is just "Eh"...

That's Yaz, not Erasure. :P
Vince Clarke was in both bands, as well as Depeche Mode. They're easily confused. Yaz's singer was Alison Moyer, who sounds more like a man than Erasure's male singer, Andy Bell.

I kind of hated Erasure, but I think it's mostly because I was over the synthpop stuff and more into REM, Cure, Bunnymen and so on by the time they came around. I even forgot that I had in fact seen Erasure (making it 5 from your list)—they opened for Depeche Mode in Ft, Worth, TX in 1985 or '86. IMHO, DM's best album is Music for the Masses, which came out a bit later.

My rule of thumb is stuff I can sing along to. It means I know the song so I'm listening without consciously trying. it fine tunes my brain, though so I'm more focused. Doesn't matter the song so long as there are words and I know them.

It is also my measure of tiredness. Just like I keep my drink glasses in front of me (stacked in my hand if plastic) to remind me how many I've had, I know how tired I am by how I'm singing along.

I sing with all my might when I'm wide awake.

I start to whisper the words, I'm getting tired

I start mouthing the words, think about pulling over

I start just thinking the words - DEFINITELY pull over.
