Naming your scoot....

I was wondering why people name their scoots? I know it's just for fun and all, which answers my own question, but are there any other reasons people do this? Is it like a "new boat" type thing? What's next? Are people gonna start christening their new scoots by breaking a bottle of bubbly on the side of it or something? Obviously not as it would probably put a dent in a nice new scoot but. I wonder.....
P.S. I'm just being a prat right now and have been watching a bit too much Monty Python.....

I have never really named my bikes or cars...But 3 of them over the years ended up with them...and yeah, Too much Python will do that to ya'

I didn't break a bottle of champagne, but I did anoint her with a shot of Johnny Walker Black. Seemed only proper, seeing as I named her after an Irish faerie.

I've never really named any of my vehicles before the scoot. Mostly because since the day I ordered it people were asking me "whatcha gonna call it?!"
Well, I called my Geo "Grandma" but it wasn't really a name... it was a reference to how slow it was, how it smelled funny, and the color, "Granny Gold" aka "Champagne." ...it reminded me of my grandma.

Honestly, it's already called Buddy, so I call it Buddy. I'm not usually a namer, but I solicited opinions on names when I got it. But Buddy seemed sufficient. When we got the Vino, we started calling it Vinnie.

I always name my vehicles, just another way i make it my own

my Honda Accord: blinkie (It had those 80's style folding headlights)
My Toyota 4runner: Thristy (seems to never stop suckin down gas)
My Ford Mustang: Arnold (Its a muscle car, Arnold schwarzenagger, Get it?)
My Honda SH150i: Sasha (Scubs anyone?)

All my vehicles have had names, it was just kind of something that happened.

My first car was a little white '96 Ford Escort hatchback that I loved to death- I named it Spunky like the dog in Rocko's Modern Life, because it was kind of retarded and nobody loved it as much as me (and it was white).

My second car, the '02 Jetta that died in August, was a surprise waiting for me when I got back from Otakon one year... so it was Otakar for a while (plus I had a moogle in one window and a chocobo in the other). Then, it got re-dubbed Crayola Car because, well... it ALWAYS smelled like crayons. Always. Coconut air freshener? Coconut crayons. Spilled tequila? Still smelled like crayons. Husband farts constantly on an 8-hour trip to Tennesse? Crayons. Rains into the sun roof... four different times? Still smells like crayons. Everybody who ever got into the car made the same comment... "Your car smells like crayons!"

So it seemed pretty natural to come up with a name for the scoot. I knew that I was swapping seats, I tend to be color-oriented when coming up with names. The first thing I thought of when I thought of dark green and white?

Sailor Pluto. Because I'm a nerd like that. But at first mention of a sailor scout, it was boyfriend who said, "Oh god, Sailor Scoot sounds amazing XD"

And it stuck.

I named my old scooter... scooter. I would tell my girlfriend, "I'ma go ride scooter"

My new scooter I bought from a lady named Nancy, She left a "label maker" label on the dash when I bought it, that said 'Nancy's scooter'. So I kept the Nancy part and now i say "I'ma go ride Nancy"

VW actually asked this question ("Who's VW smells like crayons?!") on FB a couple months back! Apparently the crayon smell is a result of the adhesive they used to attach the headliner and other fabric pieces in the car.
My 2001.5 (technically there is no such thing as a 2001 Jetta Wagon) doesn't have the crayon smell because it was built in Germany (as opposed to Mexico, where most of the mk4 Jettas were built) and the European built models used a different, higher quality adhesive... that doesn't smell like crayons.
Plus I have a leather interior, so there's less fabric that needed to be glued on anyway.

You said you had a 2002, do you know the engine code? Was it a 1.8T or a 2.0, or a VR6? What happened to it for it to die? ...this is off topic so if you want, PM me, I have lots of questions for you!

Also, the "rain into the run roof" is because of a recall... the drain "nipples" on the car end with a flat spot (I can take a picture of mine later) that usually got clogged, causing water to build up in the drains and the sun roof, leading to water leaking all over the place. For some reason they thought that the water would build up enough pressure to force the flat ends open to drain... maybe if it rained as if a pressure washer was being forced directly into the drain line... ? Anyway, cut off the flat ends and you're golden, no more leaking. The late 2003s and on had open drainage lines, so water could just flow right out, no problem. If you brought your 99.5-2002 in for the recall, all they did was cut off the flat end anyway!

Anyway back to naming vehicles....
Now that I think of it, I do call my Jetta/Getta the "Jettagon" or the "Gettagon." The reason for this is that my boyfriend and I have 3 VWs. Two of which are Jettas, a 1997 GL and my Wagon. If we were to call them both "The Jetta" we wouldn't know which one either of us was talking about, especially when it comes to maintenance, since we do it all ourselves!
So we have "The Jetta/The Beater" and the "Gettagon/Jettagon"... and the GTI, which I don't think has a name, he just calls it "his baby" and refers to it as "She". I think a little car like that with ~320 horsepower should have some kind of beastly name personally, but that's just me.

I love all the Anime references in your post. Me and my wife were arguing about Inyuasha characters last night. I haven't introduced her to Sailor Moon yet though, she wants to see Full Metal Alchemist first.

I haven't named any of my scooters or motorcycles before. I'm sure the PCX will get a name eventually, and the Buddy probably will get some sort of name after I paint it. My wife wants it to be yellow, so it's going to be rubber duck yellow.

Our Honda Pilot is called the Mothership, because it has some ridiculous interior lighting, and our Honda CR-V is called the Urban Assault Vehicle because it has a brush guard, CB antenna, and more dents and scratches than any other vehicle we've owned from battling through traffic and pedestrians in Atlanta.

Ahem, now that I'm done wiping the tears from my eyes I can tell you about my named vehicles. Naming vehicles is just something we do in my family. We also name our Thanksgiving & Christmas turkeys. Since they're the guests of honor, we figure they should have names.

Plus, it's an old maritime tradition that has carried over into modern life by being applied to land vehicles. (BTW, I actually am wearing my pirate costume while I'm writing this, so it's entirely appropriate.)

My first car was a blue & white 1972 Mercury Grand Marquis. It was a land yacht. We called it the Valdez because it burned as much oil as the U.S.S. Valdez spilled that year. Years later, I had a beige '85 renault Alliance that I loved, but I don't remember if I named it or not. When the Renault got totalled, I ended up in a beige Ford Tempo that I called every name in the book. I really hated that car, and it seemed the feeling was mutual. I traded that in for a red 1990 Mazda Protege. That was a car I loved. I named it Uhura Mazda partly for Nichelle Nichols' character in Star Trek, and partly after the Hindu/Vedic destroyer goddess. She was a great car! She was my college car, and I drove her until she died. It also didn't help that I got T-boned in that car on the way to work the day of a big snow storm before one flake had even fallen. =( That made me very sad. I eventually replaced her with another Mazda Protege, a burgundy 1992 model with sunroof. Another great car. Her name was Meresankh. (Sound familiar?) I sold her just before the move to Las Vegas. I haven't owned a car since then. I've had access to cars, but I haven't owned one in about 6 years.

Now the scoots are Cleo and Nepthys, obviously. I try to keep to Ancient Egyptian-themed names these days. The only problem is that there's not that many female Egyptian names that are known, or that are fairly easy to spell and pronounce.

Hmmm.. That went on longer than I intended. I think maybe my pirate hat is on a little too tight. Does anyone know where the rum's gone?...

Me and a few friends did the same thing to the P200 with a few shots of Vodka. I grew up with that tradition from my dad's Russian side of the family (seems it is a common custom among train engineers and pilots).

As for a name... eh, it hasn't given itself one yet. It's not very good on fuel (60mpg on a good day) so it's a rather gluttones little bastard. But, it's an original, unmolested P series with every original part aside from tires, fluids and spark plug. So, I'm sure something will come up.

Introduced FMA to my little brother in law. He's been watching the neutered Naruto/Pokemon crap for the longest time but now that he's 15 I decided to actually show him some good stuff. Started him out on FMA, the first four episodes of Cowboy Bebop and a little more old school stuff in the first few episodes of Vampire Hunter D.

Needless to say, he's developing a nice set of issues now

Why, thank you, Luna. A lot of your post tend to make me laugh out loud. Then I have to explain to my office mates what's so funny.

(BTW, the part about the husband farting all the way to Tennessee is still cracking me up!)

Today is my last day at my office job. This coming week and a half is the big packing push and the move to Austin. Since I'm not gonna be at the office for Halloween, I figured I should dress up before I go. I decided not to dress up today because I'm on the scoot today. Tonight I'm taking the Nevada Scooter Brigade to my last Bike Night at Mr. D's with them. It's also a bit difficult to manage the pirate outfit while riding the scoot. The hat & giant flooffy feather tend to not fare well at speed.
