Loud pop while riding?

Post by SockyTX »

Yesterday towards the end of my ride, approx 70 miles, I heard what sounded like my tire blowing out. I slowed and pulled over. After inspecting both tires and the Stella, I could not find anything. Is it possible for my inner tube to pop with out the tire deflating?

What about road debris kick-up? A small peppble or stick kicked up into the fender area... it's possible it could have been something simple.

I don't think it was a backfire, and I didn't see anything in the road but we had like 20 mph winds, so leaves, acorns and assorted debris were blowing over the roads all day. But I cant rule those out as options cause I have yet to figure out what it was.

Thanks for the suggestions, but my question remains unanswered. Can tires hold air if an inner tube pops?

Yeah, if the tube blows, the air will go fast. Especially if the pop is loud enough to hear it. Running over an acorn can make a loud pop when it's crushed.

If I recall correctly, Ironman was on a Stella when he did it.

You can try a little experiment. Get a acorn, toss it at the fender and listen if the sound is similar. spr0k3t may be onto something with his acorn theory.

What... is your name?
What... is your favorite colour?

...

I'm sure the next question is going to be some random thought on the theory of the eastern acorn vs the larger southern woodland acorn.

you can do this with small animals too so you can tell what you hit in the dark. beats guess that fur clump.
