I started a "club", in Kalamazoo

Post by xTomBx »

Ive been asking around the area (Kalamazoo MI), and there seems to be no unifying "group" of scooterists in my area that is active so I bit the bullet and started up my own.
For now, it a facebook group, but I hope to whip up a website down the road.
I just want a fun, irreverent group that doesn't take itself too seriously.

I believe there is (or at least was) a fairly active chapter of the Moped Army in Kalamazoo. Not that I'd expect them to be especially welcoming of scooters (which are not mopeds, after all), but it might be worth seeking them out for the sake of establishing friendly diplomatic relations with them.

Good luck!

I live a little too far to get involved regularly, but I get in the Kalamazoo area from time to time, so perhaps we can connect for a ride. I also do semi-regular mixed (scoots and MCs) rides with a group of good folks. If you're in our neck of the woods, feel free to contact me and join us if you'd like. The neck of the woods to which I refer is where we spend the majority of our weekends ... a place called Bass Lake about an hour SW of South Bend. We do wander quite a bit, so it's not unusual for the group to end up in MI.

I went to a Beer Fest (it might have been called Beer Week) in Kalamazoo awhile ago. Visited Bell's brewery. Some very tasty brews.

Big fan of Kzoo and Bells Brew Co.! I'd be in but Indy is a bit too far south;) Best of luck with the club.

I like the 'logo' Sorry but, it looks more like a raccoon to me.
You making up stickers and/or patches? I'd like to have one.
Become an 'Honorary Member' in Pennsylvania maybe?

Yeah, they are hardcore "Mopeds only" but I plan to invite them on rides as well.

I was torn on the sloth/coon thing, but raccoons have pointy ears.
I will probably tweak the graphic a dozen more times anyway before im happy. :)

Merch is an unknown, depends on interest. I hope to at least do stickers if not at least some punk-rock DIY patches.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone!

Led the first ride for "the sloth" today!
5 riders, about 30 miles round trip with an Ice Cream stop in the middle.
Overall, good times!

Sweet! Looks like you had a good time.........scooters and ice cream, what's not to like?

Maybe some year I'll try to get something going here in Holland....or not

My own sloth factor is pretty high.

I'm having a REALLY tough time connecting with other riders and feeling super discouraged. :/

I have the FB page, and I keep begging the local cycle (scooter selling) shops to cross post and just am not getting any action.
I've held 4 rides since last year. (3 last year and the first today)

The ride attendance was (including me)- 5, 2, 2, 2.
And the last 3, the other rider was not even a scooterist! One was a highly modded trail 70 and the other a tomos moped.

Good for you for being proactive and starting your own group!

Love the sloth picture. I think it looks very sloth-like, and the quirky little smile is very cute too! :D

A raccoon looks very different:

Hang in there, we're just getting into riding season, so hopefully things will pick up for you. With WMU located there, you would think there be a fair amount of scoots in the area.

This caught my eye because, oddly enough, we just did a little trip into Kalamazoo yesterday. Mostly motorcycles with a few scoots thrown in. In general, work related people from both northwest IN and the Detroit area met up in Kalamazoo (almost the midway point). We had breakfast at a place called the Crow's Nest. Very good!

If we make that trip again or the next time I'm in the Kalamazoo area, I'll get in touch to see if you want to join in for a little ride. We'll make that outside of the beer festival (or whatever they call it), which I plan to attend again. Definitely not the best time for me to ride or drive.

As Groucho Marx said, "I've half a mind to join a club so I can turn around and beat you with it."
