Should I buy it?

Post by leicester »

Hello!

I've been lurking ever since my fiancee and I started dreaming about getting a Buddy a few weeks ago. We tried to get one new from the local dealer but they wouldn't let me finance one so I continued my search on craigslist...

Well, I found an '09 Buddy 150 Pamplona with only 1,100 miles. I talked the guy down to $1,950. I went and checked it out yesterday and it's in mint condition. The guy took extremely good care of it, had a full service and tune up at 900 miles, has a clean title, kept every service record, owner's manual, and even every gas receipt. Also, he's throwing in a brand new helmet.

Bear in mind that I'm not just getting it for the hell of it. It will be used as a daily commuter around town.

I'm set up to bring him a stack of cash tomorrow and drive it home and I could not be more excited!

Am I making a good move? Is that a stupid question? Any other advice, what to expect, etc.?

Thanks!
Josh

IMVHO if it's got a clean title and service records...go for it.

But put the helmet away for a spare, and go get your own as soon as feasible for you.

(I just don't do used helmets)

Make sure you get safety gear: armored jacket, gloves, helmet. Stay away from used gear. It is better then nothing but new is the only way to be sure stuff is not damaged
Also get good chain and lock (Kryptonite brand for example). Xena disk lock alarm may be a good idea. Do not depend on stearing column lock. It will not prevent theft.
I am assuming you already have motorcycle license or permit (whichever your state requires)?
Congrats on finding your ride. Buddies are little dependable work horses.
Make sure your fiancee takes a picture of you after your first Buddy ride. You will likely be experiencing what is known as Genuine grin". Nothing to worry about. It is a chronic condition common to all Buddy owners. It is very contageous so do not be surprised if your fiancee decides she also wants a Buddy

It sounds like a deal. 1,100 miles shows that it hasn't just sat in a garage forever, and it should last a long time if you keep taking care of it. It's great to start off with a pretty fresh full service.

I also live in OKC. A scooter can keep up with the traffic unless you are taking interstates. You also get better gas mileage than a huge pickup or oversized SUV. Also, the drought is bad for farmers/ranchers, great for scooterists. Welcome to MB!

It's funny how different people can draw completely different conclusions from the same data, to me 1100 miles on a 09 are just peanuts, the thing was barely broken in!

+1 the safety gear, if you need any more reasons for it you should visit my recent thread or Luna's

You are right that it's barely broken in, but 1,100 is more than something ridiculously low like 45. That is what I was trying to say. :)

If you like that color go for it. I have looked at it on CL also since I am here in OKC.

Granted, that's a week in the country to me, :) but at least it is broken in.

That is a great deal.

There was a trade in at a local shop for $2k in @ the same shape, and I wouldn't hesitate. You do miss out on the warranty and roadside assistance for 2 years, but really your insurance probably has some provisions for roadside, and very seldom does something go wrong.

I would have someone do a lookover if you purchase it, with oil and the like, but there's not much mechanically that would be an issue. if it was, the original owner probably would have had it fixed under warranty.

Just remember, if you're financing, you're not paying $1,950, especially if you're pulling a cash advance off a credit card. So how good of a deal is it really?

Save up and pay cash. Then buy something in January or February when someone really has to sell when they realize the hangover from too much spending at Christmas.

Hey everybody! Sorry for the late update. It's mine! And man, it's a blast! I'm so excited to be an official Buddy rider! I wanted to post a pic last night, but I was having trouble adding one. Anyway, it's stock so it's nothing you haven't seen before. Rides like a dream!

Congratulations on getting the Buddy!
At what point does a hobby become an addiction? I'm uncertain, but after the twelfth scooter, it sorta feels like the latter...

Oh, here are a couple of awesome photos my (photographer) fiancee took of me and the buddy yesterday: (and then I'm done for this thread)

Now comes the really fun part (besides riding): making it your own with accessories!! I never thought I'd spend so much time and money customizing my Buddy 170i, but I love making mine stand out even more. Welcome to the club!
