For those of you that have never been, I'd recommend this show. While the number of scoot displays have down the last couple of years, at least in Chicago, there are some good seminars, vintage bikes, and good to great deals on gear and accessories.

It's always a fun time. Tons to see. And every year I pose on the latest T100 to take my annual "I wish I owned a Bonneville" photo. It's become a frustrated tradition.

Adventurists SG have a ride going to the Long Beach show on Dec 8th.

Seriously? They're skipping Phoenix, Las Vegas and Houston?!?! Vegas I could understand due to the size, but Phoenix and Houston are two of the top ten largest cities in the US! Hell, Phoenix Metro is bigger than about three of those places combined, and you have riding weather all year round here.

They've totally deleted the Southwest entirely, but still go to Minnesota AND Michigan ?

The tour started in Atlanta, GA at the beginning of the month. They're in the SW right now. :) I think they're in CA at the moment.

They did Dallas, so no need to to Houston. And The Minneapolis Metro area is 3.4 mil people. Phoenix is 4.2. We aren't exactly small potatoes.

Maybe they couldn't get a venue cheap enough in Phoenix. Or they wanted to avoid all the meth heads, or maybe Progressive, who is the major sponsor, has a problem with Phoenix. Don't get your undies in a bunch about it.

For those going to the IMS in Long Beach, can you please post up the answers to these questions.

1) Is KTM there?
2) If yes, do they have the Duke 390 on display?
3) If yes to #2, any idea of price in the US?

I'm going to the NYC show (unless the weather is dreadful and I can't get down there), and really, can't wait until mid-January for the answer.

I've turned into a 12 year old boy, dreaming about this new bike. I feel like I need to cut out pictures and plaster them all over my bedroom walls. Maybe I'll do that to my office, hmmm.

I never thought I'd join Team Orange with a street bike.

I think the best thing would be to go to their website and check it out. I checked out the Chicago show there and looked at Long Beach while I was at it. KTM will be at both, although I couldn't find any reference as to the models that will be on display. I didn't dig too deeply, so that info might be there somewhere.

Thanks Rob. Yeah, I already confirmed KTM is gonna be in NYC. I just want to know if they're showing the Duke 390 AND if they're giving an indication of price.

I may have to sell something to make room in the garage. I am seriously sick in the head over this bike. And I'm never like that! The damn insurance money from my stolen bike...is burning a hole in my pocket, even though it's technically earmarked for a 2006 Husqvarna 610TE.

i went. made a thread about my disillusionment with cycles on account, but deleted it and have decided to post all about my reservations here or in another cycle thread on the board

big, heavy BIKES. boo

two scooters in the parking lot out of hundreds of cycles. one was mine :/

oh, KTM was there, i did not see a Duke unless it was hiding elsewhere. is KTM associated with Kawasaki? their bikes were sort of off to the side of the Kawi's a bit, but they seemed to be in the same....area and under the same banner

more later....seemed like a good show with lots of bikes

I missed the Atlanta show but Floyd Grimm of Vespa Marietta(Ga.) said
they set the show and did well. Metro Atlanta has 5 million population the
last I heard. I will definately get to the next one.

I can only find a Duke 690 on the U.S. website.

Thanks for the info! KTM is definitely not part of Kawi. Company is from Austria (Kraftfahrzeuge Trunkenpolz Mattighofen). I hope the little Duke is at the New York show.

The 390 is coming to the US for 2013. If it fits, it may be the first new moto I've ever bought. Seriously, I have pictures hanging on the walls in my office, my Austrian porn.

The Duke does look to be well hung.

Nice bike!

I went couple of years ago to a bike show in Baltimore Timmonium Fairgrounds. It was really packed, lots of gear and really neat bikes. Did not see many scooters at all. Was impressed with people who actually rode in while the temps were really freezing and the wind alone should have deterred anyone from riding.
They did not bring Tron cycle (kiddo was majorly disappointed). I did take pictures of Sons of Anarchy actor who was at the bike show. Wish they would do the show in Baltimore again...

Apparently International is not the only motorcycle show. We actually will have a bike show again in Baltimore in February:

I think that is the one I went to last time.

The one in DC was awesome. 4 of us went and took pictures of everything. All the new 2013's from everyone, right there to throw a leg over and try out. My lady tested the seat height of every scooter there, haha. Lots of custom airbrushed bikes all over the place. Here's one below, actually. What's a better name for this one: "Motor-Michael" or "Michael-Cycle"?

I went Saturday to the DC show, which was pretty good. Not enough scooters to look over but did get to check out the new 2013 bikes. I really liked the new CB1100, Honda did a really nice job with it. Being a cruiser guy, the cruisers really spoke to me the most but the CB1100 has made the short list for the "Next Bike". :D

I went to the NYC show on Saturday...a really good show. I got there early as I had an agenda of the manufacturers I wanted to visit. I was able to have long, deep conversations with the salesmen (yes, all men) so I'm really happy I went. Lois Pryce of Lois on the Loose was there, and I was excited to meet her. I still can't believe she up and left working for the BBC.

Some thoughts:
KTM makes some really, really nice bikes. I asked about the Duke 390, and the guys said "within the next 12 months." They have no delivery date and no price. I did find out that the price will be released about 30 days before the first bikes are delivered (due to fluctuations in currency exchange).

Duke 690 -- really nice ergos
Image

I hope that Zero Motorcycles do well. The bikes look fantastic and the ranges are starting to make sense. Now the price just needs to dip a bit. I'm curious on life-length on the batteries.

Zero XU, the Urban Assault! Absolutely beautiful. I couldn't stop looking at it.
Image

I'm even more sold on picking up a Husqvarna. The sales guy who is the Northeast sales manager was fantastic in the way he interacted with me. Who cares that he's raced the International Six Days TWENTY-THREE times and have gold medals out the wahzoo. He wanted to make sure I knew what options I had.

Got to check out the new Hondas.
The CB1100 was obviously catching the eyes of the target market...guys who owned CBs in the '70s. They were lining up to sit on it. The tank had an extra design twist to it that I didn't like, and I also didn't like the cheap turn signals (plastic). But I get it.

The CB500X is MUCH NICER looking in person. If only the snout was a wee bit longer. I liked it, liked it much more than I thought I would. It felt nice, too, not too cramped for my height.

The CBR500R was really nice. Honda has a real winner there.

Suzuki is out to kill my soul. Really? A DR-Z 400SM, a grey DR650 and a DR200?! That's it? The sales guy said something like, well, these bikes don't need any changes because they're really great how they are. Oh my dear Suzuki, come up with something interesting!

Suzuki DR-Z 400SM ... no changes in over a decade
Image

I finally got to sit on the BMW C600 Sport scooter. Man, that thing is HAWT. So much nicer looking than the GT. A dad put his littler girl on it after me and I asked her what she thought. She grinned and said "Pretty!" And the generations continue.

Ducati didn't disappoint by having girls in tight ruched red dresses walking around with iPads. You know, it's Ducati. What can you say? They also had a cappuccino center. These are the same folks that kept electing Berlusconi.

The KLR has become a big fat pig. Kawi, do you really think that people are wavering between a BMW GS1200 or a KLR?

Oh and a pink & black Harley 883 -- note the logo ... really sweet throwback to the old NYC subway tokens
Image

Vintage at the show...purdy Laverda
Image

New York State Police were there. I gotta lose that belly!
Image

What better way to end the day than a wurst and a dunkel at Hallo Berlin.
Image

The next day we went out to Long Beach on Lawn Guyland to have a look at Hurricane Sandy damage. WOW is all I can say. There should be boardwalk in front of those buildings. Giant trucks were zipping back and forth, delivering screened sand to the beach, on a Sunday. WOW.

This year's MSF rider coach money is going to buy a trip for two to Peru. I talked to a Peru mototour guy at the show (BMW bikes) and he had me convinced. I came home and found a different company that uses bikes I'd be more interested in riding (Honda NX400, Yammy Tenere 660 and a modern Honda Transalp 700). The whole thing, including round-trip flight from New York should be about $5500 for two people/two bikes. I've always wanted to go to Peru, but had to go back to Ireland two/three times a year. I don't have to do that anymore, so watch out Peru!

I'm also looking to replace my stolen bike. It's definitely going to be a Husqvarna. The baby Duke, that's just a dream, albeit in orange.

Don't I know it? I still vividly remember the first time I saw a DB1. I was standing on a street-corner in Geneva. The bike came brapping down the street from my right and turned up the street to my left. When he downshifted and heeled it into the turn, the world went all Hollywood slow-motion on me. No sound. Just a perfect moment of that über-cool bike floating by me in slow-mo then he caught second gear and the world came back to real time as he blasted away down the block. What a beautiful bike! The rider was all in full matching leathers the way folks do on the Continent. Whew! As you say, totally NSFW.

Not to 'hi-jack' your post but, I grew up just a few miles from that beach, was up for most of the month of November helping Mom clean up after the storm, that exact spot has been a long time favorite hang out spot for me (since Dick Nixon was president) The destruction was heart breaking, it is good to see re-construction in progress. Thanks...... 8)

No hijack. My boyfriend's mom lives in Oceanside and she made out ok. Her school lost its boiler but her house didn't get flooded. Other family are still out of their houses (Bayshore). It's still really bad but doesn't get the same press as other storms. Even parts of the City are still really, really bad.

I hope your mom is back to her normal life. They're really trying to get the tourism places back.

Mom is in South Valley Stream, just south of the Green Acres Mall, Shopping Center as we called it growing up. Had about 3 feet of water in her garage and basement, even more in the crawl space as her house is a split level. Lost her car and boiler and of course no power for most of 3 1/2 weeks. I got her to Bennington Vt to my daughter's while I worked on getting things cleaned up, she'd been wanting me for a few years to clean out the basement, now there was a reason to. All is mostly back to normal for her except there's still a tree stump next to her driveway making it difficult to pull her new car in and out, Mom has to complain about something.....

Thanks for the excellent report! The Chicago show is coming up and I'm really looking forward to going. I'm not sure if Lois Pryce will be in Chicago, but I'd certainly like to get a chance to talk to her. I've read and enjoyed both of her books.

You may already be familiar with the ADVRIDER.com site, but you'll be able to find a ton of good info and reviews there on many of the bikes that interest you.

International Motorcycle Show

Post by theflash784 »

I went to the one in Novi Mi this past weekend. I took my daughter and granddaughter along with me. There were only a few scooters from Honda, Yamaha and the Suz Burgman. My 5 yr old granddaughter had the most fun sitting on all the different kinds of motorcycles, scooters and ATV's. I did try on several helmets and got a silver Summit modular helmet.

I'm heading up to the Chicago show this weekend and will try to post pics of any interesting or unique rides that haven't already found there way here.

Just came back from our local show. Lots of wild-looking bikes, strikes and even 4- wheeler's and RV's of all things. Those that were for sale came via local bike shops mostly. Lots of Charley's, even one Harley scooter. Couple of Urals, several spiders, numerous cruisers. Looked at Bergmans. Those are huge! no way will I be able to handle one of those behemoths. Hondas on the other hand seemed somenhow lighter, less intimidating and not quite as huge as Bergmans. I did fall in love with new Honda sports bike. It was only 250 cc, just the right height and the right price. I had to remind myself that what I need is a cruiser style bike and more cc's. That means at least 400 cc maxi. Bergie is definately out......
There were several Rucks, Vino, a Met and surprisingly no sign of Piaggio or Vespas

Sounds like you had way more than they did at the Novi show. There was only 1 Ruckas, one Metro and a 150 scooter at the show I was at. Yamaha had 1 Vino and 1 Zuma. I did not see some of the other motorcycles that others saw. They must have skipped coming to Michigan

We do not get International here in Baltimore but we do have a huge regional show at our Fairgrounds in February. I cannot say there were many scooters but there were some. Lots of bikes. My biggest problem I think is having brough kiddo to the show. He got very happy wsith a Honda Met. When I looked at the picture I realised he had the "scooter grin"

Stormswift- I know what you mean. I took my 5 year old grand daughter with me. She loved sitting on all types of the motorcycles, the scooters and the ATV's. She really liked the kid size dirt bikes. [/img]

I have to say, I was a little disappointed in this year's show. It seems as though they continue to downsize every year.

I was prepped to post pics of any interesting bikes I came across, but I didn't see anything wasn't already here. Although I have to say I still love those vintage Norton bikes displays. And I always spend some time with the Indians and Triumphs.

We would like to upsize the scoot and we did see the BMW. It looked very interesting (to me), but it's too large for my wife .... so we'll continue to look ... or wait.

And I did see the new Honda CTX700 bikes. They looked great. I'm thinking they might be a good midsized bike to replace the Shadow.

Rob, even the sport C600? That thing looked the bee's knees and it didn't feel nearly as heavy as the GT650. I don't know, maybe it was the blue that got me? I'm usually not that shallow ;)

I don't really get the big scoots, at least in the US, but man, that C600 was purdy.

I'm gonna drop my next dime on the KTM 390 Duke (if it fits me). I have pics all over my office, and one of the profs who is retiring next year says he's gonna get one as his "happy retirement to me" bike.

Yep, he's got the "grin" going on there!
You interested in getting him a used Met? Mine's still available for sale and looking for some TLC.......

KB, if you recall all the drama when I was trying to put the rear rack on Dobby.....me hanically inclined I am not. Kiddo I am sure would love the Met. The local cops will not love him on it at age 12 especially with the new registration stickers regulations. I expect them to be out there full force as soon as riding season starts

Siobhan, You're preachin' to the choir. I'm not a fan of the mega scoots either, but I could be very happy on the C600. The better half learned to ride on the 125, so while she wants to upsize, I don't think she's confident about handling a larger bike. But in her defense I have to say, she really couldn't flat foot the 600. So we may have one of the larger Vespas in our future.

I did look for the Laverda as that was a love at first sight thing for me (from your NYC pics), but apparently it didn't make the Chicago trip.

Here's hoping you're riding the Duke this summer!
