My 2013 Buddy 170i
Hi, I just bought a 2013 Genuine Buddy 170i used with 700 miles that had been serviced with papers at 500 miles. When I bought it, it started right up with no problems. I ordered locks for it and had it sitting in doors for the last 5 days without starting it. This morning I tried to start it and the red engine light came on and it didn't start. I'm wondering if maybe I need a trickle charger for the battery, also when we took it off the truck we had it tipped bringing it down could that have flooded the engine? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks, I can't wait to be riding my Buddy!
Does the starter do anything (trying to turn it over) when you press the button? If it's a weak battery, after 5 days it should still at least sound like it's trying.
If it's simply a dead battery, hooking it up to a non-running car's battery with jumper cables should allow you to start the scooter normally.

Are you holding the brake lever when starting? (You need to.)
And are you sure the kill switch is off? (It needs to be.)
Sorry of those are rudimentary questions; very common when new owners can't start their scoots!
A weak battery will at least do something when you try to start. It would be unusual for the battery to completely die in just 5 days unless something was draining the juice. Did you happen to leave the key in while it was sitting?
Flooding the engine is always a possibility if it tipped, as is flooding the air filter.
Did you start it at all after hauling and tipping?
Could also be a loose spark plug cap. Might have jiggled a bit during transport.

I hate to be this guy, but... Not true. When I visit my parents I hit the kill switch at the top of the hill in front of their house. The engine often runs for a second afterwards before the scooters slows down and little and the engine kicks off.hal888 wrote:Nope. I don't think he meant "run" for a couple minutes (or as the Brits would say, "ticking over"), but instead the thermal contraction during cooldown, quite normal.hal888 wrote:Nope. exactly. like i posted up top, its the sound of metal, etc....cooling. if a person has never heard this in their life when shutting off autos and bikes its time to get the hearing checked!PeteH wrote:I don't think he meant "run" for a couple minutes (or as the Brits would say, "ticking over"), but instead the thermal contraction during cooldown, quite normal.hal888 wrote:Nope. Thanks for all the help, that makes me feel a bit better! I'm excited about this Buddy! I ordered a OnGuard 5017LPT Beast Chain Bicycle Lock, it has the rod which goes through the rim of the back wheel, to be locked up with at night around a pole. Anyone else has one of these locks? If so how do you like it? Thanks
Not necessarily. On a car the sound is often muffled by the body of the vehicle; on a scooter, the engine and exhaust are exposed and easier to hear. Plus we usually just walk away from cars when we get out of them, but with scooters we tend to stand around and look longingly at it.JHScoot wrote:like i posted up top, its the sound of metal, etc....cooling. if a person has never heard this in their life when shutting off autos and bikes its time to get the hearing checked!
