NSR Anyone here suffer from BPV?

Post by michelle_7728 »

BPV - Benign Positional vertigo is what the Nurse Practitioner I saw the other day said she thought I have.

I'm going to a otolaryngologist Monday, to get a second opinion...maybe even insist on a MRI or Cat scan.

I felt dizzy one day earlier this year (for 3 or 4 hours), then I started feeling dizzy once or twice a month for a couple minutes, then every week or two for a couple minutes.

All of a sudden, this Tuesday it hit, and I felt vertigo all day long. I left work and saw the nurse practitioner, and she thinks I have BPV.
I was okay the next day or two, then yesterday when I got up at 6:00am I felt it, and it has lasted through today (10am).

Has anyone experienced anything like this before? The timing really stinks, as selling my scooters would be hard to do in the middle of winter.

Of course scooters are th LEAST of my problems if this does not go away.... :(

A number of years back I was diagnosed with an inner ear infection that caused the symptoms you have described. When it finally hit me full head on there was no pain, just came on suddenly, luckily for me I was at home but it woke me out of a sound sleep. I was hospitalized for four days, kept on anti's for 3 of 'em, not allowed to have any caffeine containing products. The worst part for me was the constant spinning of the room if I kept my eyes open for too long, plus the nausea. Of course the constant headache from being taken off of my beloved coffee was no joy either.

Scary when you can't control your own perception of what's around you. Even to this day I have to be careful as I still have an unsteadiness if I don't pay attention to my surroundings and my relation to them.
I didn't do any type of rehab for it just learned to deal with it. My mom also suffered from the same thing, hers was worse as she had been hospitalized several times for it.
Stay off your feet as much as possible, that is if your still able to able to remain upright. If your lucky and it sort of clears up as mine did you will still be able to do your normal activities, just a lot more carefully and slowly.

Thanks.

The nurse practitioner tried to do the Eply maneuver on me, but the dizziness came on so suddenly she stopped. She recommended I find a physical therapist that knows how to do it.

I'd recommend an EENT specialist MD before you write off scooting, etc!

A few years ago I had similar bouts and they gave me antivert for dizziness and phenergan for nausea. A few days and it went away.

They said it could be a viral infection in my middle or inner ear or could be brought on by dehydration or even hormonal imbalances.

During this time I had lots of migraines and a lot of stress in my life too.

Haven't had one in 10 years. Worked on the stress and hormones got balanced out. I also drink a lot of water since.

Hope things improve for you!

I'll second the above. Dehydration can aggravate the situation (I too suffer vertigo) so drink lots of water.

Thanks for the words of encouragement!...and I will try to drink more water.

I went to see my otolaryngologist today, but the dizziness was barely there, so the symptoms weren't as pronounced as the other day. He looked in my ears, nose, throat (as you would expect), but found nothing conclusive. He recommended I go see an audiologist next to check my balance, then see him again after that to determine what/if any next steps.

Meantime I'm trying to get in to see a physical therapist that can show me how to correctly do the EPLY maneuver, in case it is as simple as that.

Weird. Some days I'm fine, but some days...oh well.

As agrogod mentioned, my wife suffered very similar symptoms with what turned out to be an inner ear problem.

I would definitely work with a specialist before accepting a diagnosis of a relatively uncommon condition.

Best of luck with getting back to full health and back on the scoots.

My sympathies. My mother has suffered with inner ear trouble for as long as I can remember. She's been taking antivert for about that long. Incidentally it's OTC now.
