2013 Genuine Buddy 170i. Only 311 miles on it. They wanted $2,900. Talked them down to $2,000. Thing goes 70 mph. Gets 90 miles per gallon. Oh yeah!

Thanks guys. Bought my first scooter in 2014. It was a 1988 Yamaha with 26,000 miles on it. This is quite an upgrade. Will change oil every 200 miles for a few times. Will change gear oil often too. Easy on the throttle until 700 miles.

Be sure and check your valves as stated in the maintenance intervals. My 170i exhaust valve always needs adjusted.

Please explain "always" needs adjusting. How often do you actually adjust the valves and how do you know when they need it?

Checked the valves at 500 and again at 4,000 miles. Both times the intake valve was spot on. Exhaust valve was tight both times. This is pretty common, way more heat at the exhaust than intake.

Wow, are you me? Got the same exact scooter, year, and color with the same deal! Seller was asking $2900 and got them down to $2000. Where in CA are you in? Congrats by the way!

I live near Fresno. Did my first long ride on my new Buddy. Holy crap this thing can fly. After red lights, I am leaving cars in the dust, and I am only using half throttle. After I get used to this scooter, I will try the freeway in a few weeks.

At 311 miles do you know if your first service was done? You want to get rid of the fluids by 500 miles. It would be a good idea to check your valves also. It might be a good idea to read Genuine's break in advice. Glad you're having fun!

I changed the motor oil and gear oil yesterday. Then I rode 4 miles. Then I changed the motor oil and gear oil AGAIN. When my oil filter arrives in the mail, I will change the oil and filter. What will happen if I do not check my valves?

Exhaust valve gap usually slightly closes over time. Too little or no gap, the engine can't get rid of the heat on exhaust stroke. Left unchecked, you will have starting and idle problems. You can eventually fry the valve.

I have found the valves on the 125s to be more stable for some reason. The exhaust valve on my 170i was tight at the 500 and 4000 mile checks. There are a couple of real detailed posts on this forum showing you how to do it. It is pretty simple.

That is a good video. I found the best way to get it to TDC is to remove the fan shroud (right side) and turn the engine that way. You can clearly see the timing marks on the flywheel this way. I believe the shroud is held on with three 8mm bolts. I replaced the bottom bolt with an allen head to make it easier to get to. The bottom bolt is behind the exhaust pipe, but it was still much less work than removing the CVT cover.

Well, mine is history now but when I owned it and after it was broken-in by the book my best GPS verified top speed was just under 60 mph or 59.8 to be exact. This was on a flat 2 lane paved road with little or no wind. The bike, a 2012 170i Buddy Italia. had a medium sized Prima windscreen and was bone stock. As I recall, total mileage was just under 600. With my riding gear on I weigh 185 lbs. and I'm 5' 11" tall. Your 70 MPH experience is indeed impressive compared to mine so I'm naturally curious about the experience of other 170i riders. TIA,

I did not ride full speed yet. I am still breaking in the scooter gently. I am going by the review of the scooter. However, I am under the impression that top speed depends on how the scooter was broken in.
