TPS reset.

With key off, open throttle all the way.
Turn key on, but do not start bike. Wait for check engine light to shut off.
Release throttle,
Turn key off
Start bike as per usual.

Needs to be done any time the battery is out or disconnected.

Stanza,

I replaced the battery in my Buddy 170 and did not follow this procedure. It seems to be running perfectly. Would you recommend I do this?

If yours is running perfectly, you may have stumbled on a unicorn, and should leave it alone. But generally, if you have the battery out, a TPS reset is needed.

I just bought a used one and it seems to be doing this. I think they said something about replacing the batter. I am going to try this first to see if it fixes it. So glad I joined this forum!

My 170i had some small running problems just before the battery failed. I died at a stop light and once while riding in a straight line at ~40 MPH.
