DOT helmet rating ain't worth diddly-squat.

Post by JettaKnight »

Almost half of the DOT rated helmets don't actually meet the rating.

Thing is, how many of those are actually DOT rated, vs having a sticker by the "god knows who" manufacturer? In the same way that anyone can buy a vest for their angry AF dog and call it a service animal, seems like any manufacturer can slap a DOT sticker on their helmet, mirrors, lights, and who's to say they're lying?

That's why I always buy well known name brand helmets and never the cheapest one. Amazes me that some people complain about paying $50-100 for a helmet. I don't think I've ever spent less than $275 for one.

Yes, manufacturers "self certify" for the DOT rating. The honor system is probably not the best approach for safety gear. I'm with babblefish - let manufacturers earn their reputation. Or trust the European ECE certification which involves actual testing.
