Report from the DMV

Post by olhogrider »

So, I make an appointment and they tell me just to get in line with everyone else! Then they tell me to park in lane #2 for "verification" while I fill out a form. The verification lady wants to see VIN, Federal Tag, Engine # and CARB (smog) sticker. I show her all those and she shows me her Chinese Scooter parked nearby!

Back inside I take a number and wait. The man at the computer screen does some typing, then says "$176 please". I pay him and get a CA plate and registration. A lot less hassle than I had imagined. In and out in 1 hour.

I'm keeping the POC plate frame.

Back wall of the pet carrier. "This vehicle conforms to EPA and CARB..." or something like that.

Cool.
Can you make a copy of that little bastard so I can give it to the lady at CARB that is holding up my scooter delivery?

I'll go get the camera, but I doubt it will help. You would be better off to borrow a pet carrier. Any chance of that?

So, as I understand it, your Pamplona was delivered without the sticker? Can Genuine or the dealer get you one?

Well, can you buy out of state and bring it here? That's what I did. If the '09 has the sticker, your local DMV will "verify" it. Just a thought. Last I heard POC had "all models, all colors in stock".

I checked all the major dealers in CA, AZ, and NV the first week in July, as I was willing to take a road trip to get a scoot.

Everyone was out of scooters.

Try SCoot Over in Tucson. They have quite few in stock. They didn't have a Pamploma last week when I was thre though. Can't hurt to call though.

Now with the CARB issue, I don't think I should get something from out of state.

Here's the sticker. The DMV lady didn't write down any info from it, she just verified that it was there. Sorry about the scratches, but I use the pet carrier. I suspect the sticker is like a DOT on a helmet. It has to be there at the time of sale but not after.

Thanks.

The sticker that broke posted has CARB info on it...but he is in Oregon????

olhogrider's sticker is nearly identical, but with .7 g/km HC + NOx instead of .9 as on broke's sticker .

But are any of them '09s? That seems to be the hang up. Do the out of state '09s have a CARB sticker? Anyone got one?

its not the sticker causing him a problem.

its the paperwork.

i think he mentioned before that the paperwork doesnt specify carb even though the sticker does.

but i dont know if anyone else has an 09 .. it might be that the paperwork is different? or that this person he's dealing with is just a moron.

DMV

Post by PeterC »

Here in Arizona, we have private title & registration agencies in addition to the DMV. The benefit is that you're not dealing with pompous, imbecilic government employees who apply their own interpretation to any regulations, real or imaginary; you don't have to stand in interminable lines, and you save time and, often, money. Some years ago, I went to retitle and register a 48cc scooter. The local DMV informed me that a scooter under 50cc could not be legally driven on a public road. I went back to the dealer, and they referred me to a private agency nearby. Five minutes and $19.95 later, I had a new title, registration and plates.

AAA will do this in most states, as will some insurance companies. If you're having trouble, check with them.
