The ATX Scooter Experience

Post by Corsair »

So it's official: I'm loving Austin! There are ton of scooters here (well at least waayyyy more than Detroit) The people here are great too... anyway on to the scooter experience

We finally took a break and went out to the local scooter shops today... NICE! First stop was Vespa Austin (checking for a Corazzo Jacket)... show room is AMAZING, nice fixtures, good scooter merch, and friendly people working there. If you're looking for a Piaggio, Vespa Austin is definitely the place to go.

Next up: Urban Moto! Now that's a shop with "character". I got the chance to talk with Greg and Clayton... COOL COOL people! Very knowledgeable, easy going, great prices, and really looked out for us. They talked with us about Austin, the local scooter scene, meet ups, and really welcomed us to town. I'll definitely be going there often.

Now about driving in Austin... WOW! People drive FAST! I mean real fast. Everywhere. You know how you say if the posted speed in 50 people are going to do 60? Well in Austin if the speed limit is 40 you better believe they're doing 70 (easy). Granted though they seemed pretty skilled at it but wow. Oh and they will cut you off... VERY OFTEN. Signals are pretty much just a courtesy (or was that after thought? lol). For such friendly people they really drive aggressively. If you're riding in Austin make sure your brakes are in good condition.

Beyond downtown Austin I'm really feeling like you're definitely going to need something bigger than a 50cc... but hey I'm new here and still very much learning the roads, so maybe I just don't know better? Speaking of roads, Austin has to have the best paved roads I've ever been on! This city is amazingly clean and well kept. I'm loving the scenery along a lot of the routes I've seen so far too. Scooting is definitely going to be interesting ;)

Once we get settled we're planning to go riding with the local meet up. Hope to see a bunch of Buddys there :D

Ok enough with the run on sentences. I'm loving it here
:)

Cue Nerf Herder's "Welcome to my World.."

I <3 Urban Moto. They have been tolerant of me calling up there everyday. "Is my part in yet?!?"

If you want to ruin your impression of Austin roads, cruise around the campus area.

Completely agree with your comment on the driving. But put me in the cage and I am the exact same (however I use my turn signal ALL the time...) :sigh:

I hope I get to ride with y'all soon. I want to go check out Mt. Bonnell sometime and from what i hear, it is accessible by scooter.

Corsair,
welcome to ATX. I can't even imagine what must be like living in a place in which you get to scoot year-round.

Funny comment about the good roads. Yeap, once you get out of our freeze-thaw cycle States to those States that don't have that condition, wow, their roads ARE good. I am sure old Detroit was like Minneapolis, either is road construction season or winter.

ENJOY IT ! ! ! ! !
Beer is the answer . . . what was the question?

Maribell, I haven't been to Mt. Bonnell in the longest time and it was one of my "must sees" for Corsair. I certainly hope we can all scoot there soon. I actually have to get some scooter issues out of the way before I can ride legally. My friggin license plate flew off somewhere between Detroit and Indiana *longest sob in the world* I'm almost tempted to ride around a little today, but only if I'm feeling really bold.
What part are you waiting on ? [/i]

Austin is one of my favorite cities and I've frequently thought about what a great scooter city it would be. It may be the most scooter-friendly large city on Texas (with FT. Worth a second, 817 represent, yo), depending on what part of town you live in. But I remember when I was a regular visitor there, once I got off I 35, I could drive around all my central Austin destinations for days without getting back on a highway.

I just contacted Matua (Peter), the rider behind Vespadition, and he will be in Austin May 2nd & 3rd.
Matua wrote: I will definitely be coming to Austin. If you go to the Route & Schedule page of the Vespadition website, you'll find my exact route and a calendar with my schedule.

I haven't, yet, found a volunteer opportunity in Austin, but I'm looking.

CHEERS MATE!

I plan on volunteering with him when he comes through Austin. If anyone knows of a great cause to donate time to please contact him. Also, if you're a part of one of the local meet-ups or scooter clubs please spread the word to them. This guy is doing a lot of positive things and could use everyones support :)

If you can't make it out in person you can still give your support by making a Donation, Sponsoring, or Purchasing Merch through Vespadition.com

PS
Sincerely, if anyone here has ANY media contacts please let them know about his journey and cause.

anyone going to the dragon boat races Saturday (26th)? Lojical1 and I will be scooting around downtown ATX tomorrow so if anyone would like to meet up let us know.

Other than incredibly loooong traffic lights we're REALLY loving it here. If you have any suggestion on good place to tour or things to do let us know. I'd like to keep this thread alive because I've been seeing a lot of scooterist around town and I'm pretty sure some of them have to members here.

PS
just reminding everyone that Vespadition will be here soon so please chip in, contact him, or help volunteer with him once he gets into town :D

Austin is great. I lived there for 5 years before moving to Denver. You are right about the drivers. Turn signals are optional and braking is discouraged. :D I am a cyclist as well and Austin was a not cycle friendly despite the large cycle community there and the Lance factor. Texans don't like to share the road with small vehicles. This is why Suburban sales in Texas are greater than the rest of the country combined.

However, downtown and the central neighborhoods are great for scooters. My neighbor had one and loved it. Hit South Congress on first Thursday with yours and have some tacos at Gueros.

Congrats on the move! You'll love Austin. I grew up there. Still miss it sometimes, and may consider going back someday. I'm just slightly bummed that scoots weren't terribly popular there until well after I left.

When you get a scooter, you must break it in on Spicewood Springs Rd. Other Austinites will probably agree on this (you know the part I'm talking about).

Finished High School in Austin and attended UT...moved to San Antonio in 1981. Austin is so different than SA but the drivers are still the same. I also am a cyclist and a scooter and Texas Drivers DO OWN THE ROAD!

Still wouldn't live very many other places :P

just a heads up: the are some GREAT downhills on the I-35 frontage road... if you can get there when traffic is low you're in for some fun times :D

Since I've moved here I really haven't had anytime to scoot for fun, it's pretty much been:

find job
work job
find house
move into house
turn on all utilities
work
work even more to furnish house
shop for house stuff
get TX license
work
decide not to register vehicles yet (man they rape your pockets here)
work
work
Ah... a free Saturday! YES

oh by the way... my boss's boss's boss ride a scooter :D thought that was too cool. What else is funny is how many people see the orange Buddy and give me the "HOOK EM HORNS!" looks like I definitely picked the right color Buddy

Austin looks like a lot of fun.
I would join you all but I’m too far away.
I remember eating at the Iron Works in 1990, the interior looks the same except for the upgraded picnic tables, but I thought the building exterior used to be white?

Another GREAT weekend in Austin! Lojical1 and I decided to head down to the Pecan Street Festival. On the way there some guy with a video cam filmed us on our scooters (Man was he amped about scooters :) ) We chatted it up while waiting at one of those extra long lights I've been talking about. The dude was pretty cool.

We had a little running around to do before we hit the festivals, so we got to enjoy a really good day of riding (weather was perfect). On the way to the fest we stopped by Urban Moto to hang out with Greg, kinda hoping to see MadtoLive pick up her new Buddy ;). So while we're talking the guy with the video cam walks by us. Turns out he's Joel of MRP. The guy's great and he let us know about all this great new stuff for the Buddy/Blur they're putting out. He ended up filming us again so you may just see us on youtube...lol

Well off to the Fest!

OMG! On our way there we rode by one of the greatest places EVER...

now this moment was so inspiring... just before it was time to go this kid comes riding through the park yelling "HEY EVERYBODY... NEVER GIVE UP!!!" Man that was just amazing. I could have just stayed there the entire day taking pictures but lojical1 was hungry and turns out my "hey just let me stop here for a second" turn out to be about an hour ...lol

(completely random but I had to take a pic of this house)

ran into a couple of bikers that were more than happy to let us park next to them. We ended up getting a premium parking spot right at the festival :P

Maaaan, I wish I could have gone. I'm very much down for the BBQ, barring natural disasters.

well corsair and logical1 you did pick the best town around to move to. i almost moved to austin many years ago and i've done a few things on that list; bartan springs, ironhouse bbq, 6th street or is that ave, great music and more great music, river walk, watched the bats and ate blue bell icecream for the first time (before it was exported to other states). birmingham is my home but i believe austin is what birmingham wants to be and very similar in topograghy and weather - the river.
maybe i'm just a bit jealous.
good to see ya'll found a good home 8)

Oh by the way I just connected with a another scooter friend here and he says that a lot of the local scooter/hipster kids hang out at The Beauty Bar. Anyone know about this place?

beauty bar: best dj in town, hands down. vibe? uber, and i mean UBER uber hipster. on some nights it's more pretentious than others. the conga line i tried to get started once got nowhere. vibewise, it's a better scene (depending on your definition of "scene") across the street at side bar or creekside.

a must: sundays at elysium. also try the peacock lounge on the eastside.

if you ever feel like learning to dance like a messican, hit up me an my bf. we'll take ya'll to some real dance spots. no queso allowed. :D

wait, i just remembered the last time i went to the beauty bar. it was during sxsw, and i had literally just walked through the door, when some jackass spits beer all over me. i don't think it was a critique of my taste in fashion, rather a very bad case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. needless to say, i summarily turned on my heel and walked back out. mmmm, indeed, as a admission of their too-cool-for-school-ness, all during sxsw, only people with sxsw wristbands were welcome at the beauty bar.

good times. :D

I've BEEN telling you that you need to come down here! Seriously, leaving Detroit to come here has been one of the best decisions I've ever made. You need to start applying to some jobs here and just make the move (you bring all the rest of my isht with you too *hint*hint*). Mannnn I can't wait to go riding with you. You're going to love it here.

Hey, just wanted to give ya'll a heads up about a music fest this weekend:

Pachanga Festival at Waterloo Park, Saturday May 31. There will be 22 bands playing (many of them local), including Grupo Fantasma, Vallejo and Maneja Beto, very very good stuff you guys.

If you buy tix online you get two for $16. Doors open at noon, but i don't think my boy and i will go until about 4. http://pachangafest.com/

FYI: there will be very much of the "getting down". i hope ya'll can make it, it's definitely going to be a good time!

im almost sort of embarrassed to ask, since response to my invitations has been uh, well, lets just say spring is a busy time for everyone and that is understandable. just you know, fyi, my hombre will be out of town on saturday, so if anyone wants to get together for those atx buddy mafia shenanigans that are few and far between, holla at your girl.
