If you had to pick a song

Post by kazoo »

I am currently listening to Foghat's Slow Ride and I got to thinking; couples have their, song -- well, what's your Buddy song?

I don't want any flames this time, or else I promise to leave - forever.

Yes I've got another half hour to waste.

My Buddy song is the Lemonheads' laconic "My Drug Buddy," which I posted a link to in another thread recently.

What I most often find running through my head when riding? Well, i hate to be so cliché because I'm not a hardcore mod or ska fanatic, but it's the Special's "Gangsters." The rhythm is just perfect for the feel of riding. Can't help it.

To balance things out, bands whose songs most often pop in my head: Hall & Oates and ELO. After years of being a real jackass of a music snob, I eventually had to reconcile my love for certain bands from my pre-New Wave childhood.

When I read your post I had to smile at the synchronicity. We just saw Foghat last night! :)

One song? Just one song?!? It's usually the song in my head when I wake up, and that could be anything.

But one song? That may have to be Ry Cooder's version of "On a Monday". It's what I think of whenever something (Warning - NEGATIVE PERSONAL OPINION) like, oh, say, "Muskrat Love" gets stuck in my head.

Why just last night as I was scootin' home past a very, very long line of cars crawling along in the opposite direction, I was singing "Fahr mit mir, Fahr mit mir, Fahr mit mir durch die Welt!" at the top of my lungs.

"Ride with me, ride with me, ride with me throughout the world!" I might've been hot in my leather jacket but I was having fun. They were just miserable even with a/c.

If it's not that, then I'm usually singing Yo La Tengo's "Speeding Motorcycle".

Because we don't want a wreck
We can do a lot of tricks
We don't have to break our legs

"The Distance" by Cake.

Reluctantly crouched at the starting line,
Engines pumping and thumping in time.
The green light flashes, the flags go up.
Churning and burning, they yearn for the cup.
They deftly maneuver and muscle for rank,
Fuel burning fast on an empty tank.
Reckless and wild, they pour through the turns.
Their prowess is potent and secretly stearn.
As they speed through the finish, the flags go down.
The fans get up and they get out of town.
The arena is empty except for one man,
Still driving and striving as fast as he can.
The sun has gone down and the moon has come up,
And long ago somebody left with the cup.
But hes driving and striving and hugging the turns.
And thinking of someone for whom he still burns.

Simply epic.

"GTO" by Ronnie and the Daytonas but my version is "PGO" not "GTO":

"Gonna save all my money and buy a PGO
Get a helmet and Stebel and I'll be ready to go
Take it out to Pomona and let 'em know
That I'm the coolest thing around
Little Buddy gonna shut you down
When I turn it on, wind it up, blow it out PGO"

Um, it's difficult to pick one song.

Really, When I get on the scoot it's either thursday, motion city soundtrack, minor threat, or remembering never.

Those just seem to be good no matter what.

Considering many of the shops are empty you might want to go the way of Johnny Cash.

(On second thought, that would mean heading to taiwan)

One Piece at a Time:

Well, I left Kentucky back in '49
An' went to Detroit workin' on a 'sembly line
The first year they had me puttin' wheels on cadillacs

Every day I'd watch them beauties roll by
And sometimes I'd hang my head and cry
'Cause I always wanted me one that was long and black.

One day I devised myself a plan
That should be the envy of most any man
I'd sneak it out of there in a lunchbox in my hand
Now gettin' caught meant gettin' fired
But I figured I'd have it all by the time I retired
I'd have me a car worth at least a hundred grand.

[CHORUS]
I'd get it one piece at a time
And it wouldn't cost me a dime
You'll know it's me when I come through your town
I'm gonna ride around in style
I'm gonna drive everybody wild
'Cause I'll have the only one there is a round.

So the very next day when I punched in
With my big lunchbox and with help from my friends
I left that day with a lunch box full of gears
Now, I never considered myself a thief
GM wouldn't miss just one little piece
Especially if I strung it out over several years.

The first day I got me a fuel pump
And the next day I got me an engine and a trunk
Then I got me a transmission and all of the chrome
The little things I could get in my big lunchbox
Like nuts, an' bolts, and all four shocks
But the big stuff we snuck out in my buddy's mobile home.

Now, up to now my plan went all right
'Til we tried to put it all together one night
And that's when we noticed that something was definitely wrong.

The transmission was a '53
And the motor turned out to be a '73
And when we tried to put in the bolts all the holes were gone.

So we drilled it out so that it would fit
And with a little bit of help with an A-daptor kit
We had that engine runnin' just like a song
Now the headlight' was another sight
We had two on the left and one on the right
But when we pulled out the switch all three of 'em come on.

The back end looked kinda funny too
But we put it together and when we got thru
Well, that's when we noticed that we only had one tail-fin
About that time my wife walked out
And I could see in her eyes that she had her doubts
But she opened the door and said "Honey, take me for a spin."

So we drove up town just to get the tags
And I headed her right on down main drag
I could hear everybody laughin' for blocks around
But up there at the court house they didn't laugh
'Cause to type it up it took the whole staff
And when they got through the title weighed sixty pounds.

[CHORUS]
I got it one piece at a time
And it didn't cost me a dime
You'll know it's me when I come through your town
I'm gonna ride around in style
I'm gonna drive everybody wild
'Cause I'll have the only one there is around.

[Spoken] Ugh! Yow, RED RYDER
This is the COTTON MOUTH
In the PSYCHO-BILLY CADILLAC Come on

Huh, This is the COTTON MOUTH
And negatory on the cost of this mow-chine there RED RYDER
You might say I went right up to the factory
And picked it up, it's cheaper that way
Ugh!, what model is it?

I'm sorry, but I think I would be way to distracted to listen to the Ramones while riding. Either that or I would have to tune out of the tune in order to stay alive.

The Doors "LA Woman" I think would make for a good riding tune.

I appreciate stepping out of the box and hearing what others are listening too. Thanks for sharing.

Somewhat off topic. . . but when I have a good internet connection I listen to David Dye's World Cafe. Its broadcast from Phili but you can get him on npr.org when you click on the link down on the left.

Here's one that helped temporarily chase away the bedeviling bunch of barristers that are a constant source of aggravation to me.

Oh the youth of today! There is only ONE untimate scooter song!

The WHO Goin' Mobile

I'm goin' home, and when I want to go home I'm goin' mobile
Well, I'm gonna find a home on wheels, see how it feels goin' mobile
Keep me movin'

I can pull up by the kerb, I can make it on the road goin' mobile
I can stop in any street, invitin' people that we'd meet, goin' mobile
Keep me movin'

Out in the woods or in the city
It's all the same to me
When I'm drivin' free the world's my home
When I'm mobile
Hee-hoo, beep beep

Play the tape machine, making toast and tea when I'm mobile
Well, I can lay in bed with only highway ahead when I'm mobile
Keep me movin'

Keep me movin', over fifty
Keep me groovin', just a hippy gypsy
Come on, move now, movin'
Keep me movin', yeah

Keep me movin' movin' movin', yeah, movin', yeah
Mobile mobile mobile ...

I don't care about pollution
I'm an air-conditioned gypsy
That's my solution
Watch the police and the tax-man miss me
I'm mobile
Wheee yeah, hi-hi
Mobile mobile mobile, yeah
